In a previous thread I was looking at the less well-known Kohjinsha SH8:

http://forums.anandtech.com/me...=2137486&enterthread=y

2.5lb with swivel screen but the monitor is only 7 inches....

A Lenovo Thinkpad X is so close at 2.7lb and a 12" screen, but it's not a swivel screen. The swivel screen version is an entire pound heavier at 3.8lb.

Sony is just too expensive. I can't pay $2000+ for a superlight lappy.

Any other possible options?

EDIT: The only other one that I've found is the Fujitsu U810.

you can't get something for nothing. Thin and light plus tablet costs money. you won't find a decent system with those specs at $1k. Plus tablet features add weight and thickness

I don't know... the Kohjinsha SH8 gets mighty close. $1,150 shipped for a very usable laptop with a swivel touch screen. Just wondering if there's anything that can even come close to what it offers. The Kohjinsha's 7" 1024x600 screen is actually pretty close to the resolution of other laptops with 12" screens. The 800MHz Intel A110 it has outperforms the 1GHz Pentium M ULV that's in other UMPCs.

A ThinkPad is leagues different than a "Kohjinsha." I'm not dissing the brand, but in terms of quality, reliability, features, performance, service & support................yeah.

Also just a thought, you may want to go look at a 7" screen and see how that will feel with extended usage.

And is this "swivel screen" just an LCD that rotates, or an actual tablet?

The thing is that you can't compare a Kohjinsha to a Thinkpad. They're in entirely different leagues due to their weight. I would use the Thinkpad far less due entirely to the added weight and size. I'm not looking for a desktop replacement tablet laptop, but an ultra portable one that still has a usable keyboard and tablet features. So far only a few companies have anything close:

Kohjinsha / VYE
Fujitsu

That's it. Lenovo, Sony, HP, Toshiba are all out of the running because they're simply not what I'm looking for. Both Kohjinsha and Fujitsu have LCDs that rotate into the tablet orientation, as can be seen from my links. The Fujitsus have an upper hand in the inking department because they have palm rejection technology to eliminate vectoring. Kohjinshas do not. Fujitsus also have larger screens. But the Kohjinsha packs in more for the money. 120GB HDD, upgradable to 2GB RAM (Fujitsu tops out at 1GB - almost a deal breaker) and a VERY nice screen by all accounts, all for around $1150. I saw the Kohjinshas in the store in South Korea and I was seriously thinking about buying it right then and there, but wasn't sure if it was wise to buy a laptop overseas, and a Korean version to boot.
