What ^ he said.

Unless you already have a collection of LPs in good condition you won't have a point of reference.

Unless you're willing to take some risk on used gear there's not a whole lot of difference on the low-end for turntables. Its not until you hit about $400 or so that there's some higher quality stuff.

I use an 80's era Onkyo turntable that I picked up for $25 at a swapmeet. Of course I spent $80 on a belt and cartridge for it but I figure I still came out ahead with a nicer cart than something new.

I do plan on getting into audio as a hobby so I'm sure I'll upgrade in time, I figure a new turntable was wise for now since there are so many moving parts.

I'm jealous that you have swapmeets around there - there's almost zero used audio market here in NYC, and craigslist is stalked by collectors so prices inflated. Mixed with all the hipsters in thrift stores I'm basically left with ebay (where shipping kills a lot of deals)

As a complete aside, anyone know of any guides for troubleshooting older gear? I love tinkering but don't know where to start

as mentioned previously, audio karma is an awesome forum. No guides per se but lots of knowledgeable people.
That's a good resource. I've had good luck researching old gear on the respective manufacture's-related forums. ie the Klipsch forum and the Technics forum on vinylengine.

Cool! Will check out the forum for sure. Any book out there worth checking out?

FYI, I hooked up the Dayton 8" sub (sub-800) and it's shockingly good. After lots of adjustments the sub blends seamlessly with my pioneer bookshelf speakers and has a non-boomy smoothness that's surprising given the very low price. Don't have a lot to compare it to other thank a polk htib speaker (and an onkyo), but blows them away at an almost throwaway price. I have it tune way down but I'm sure it can reach house shaking levels, but it's fast and you can actually hear bass notes (instead of just shaking), which I really quite like for the price.
