sub 1k receivers?

Hey all, I am, admittedly, a complete newbie when it comes to home theater sound. I'd appreciate any recommendations for sub 1k receivers, and what specs I should absolutely look for. Of course, a link to a good home theater sound faq would work too. Thanks!

Check out AVSforum for this and also for your other questions as well as another resource.

The biggest feature to look for in this range would be HDMI audio processing. Check out the threads at AVS about HDMI capabilities for receivers to get an idea of all the different flavors that are out there. (Not as simple as it seems)

The new Onkyos are good. I have an Onkyo SR605 which runs under $500, depending where you get it. Agreed with above poster, AVS Forums is a great site for audio researching.

Outlaw, Denon, and Onkyo all make an excellent sub $1k product. I lean a little more towards Denon myself, but you can't go wrong with any of the above. Even if you don't know much about this stuff, a good indicator of quality is the mass of the receiver. Generally speaking, the more a receiver weighs, the better it's made.

yeah youre definetly going to want to try to get HDMI switching and with about 1k as a budget you should be able to. I would check yamaha and the newer onkyo, i just read a good review on one.

Soxfan, keep in mind that "HDMI switching" can simply mean that the receiver will be able to switch between inputs on HDMI and send them out again. You'll want a receiver that can not only do that, but also take the signal as an input and take the HD audio formats off that signal to play. Some cheaper receivers have HDMI switching but do not handle audio off HDMI.

Denon released some pretty slick stuff this morning - the AVR 2308CI looks like a fantastic value at $850. Toss in a 5x1, IR-controlled HDMI switch for $60 from Monoprice, and you've got a fantastic setup.
