Sub $100 card advice

My cousin is building a new computer, with an AMD 2600+, 266 MHz fsb, 512 mb of pc 2100 ddr, and a gigabyte mobo with all the frilly agp junk, he's trying to keep this under $325 dollars if possible, so to be short, hes got about $75 to allocate towards a video card. He wants to be able to play halo, even at low resolutions, and games like max payne 2, and stuff like that, he doesnt need frilly settings, just smooth gameplay, he isnt partial to ati or nvidia, any ideas?

4200s start at about $90 on pricewatch. A used/refurb one might work, though then you have all the hassles of buying from a person rather than a store.

You *can* get a RADEON 9000Pro 128MB for $75, though. Not a terrible card (a tad slower than a RADEON 8500).

I would personally suggest looking for a GeForce3 or a GeForce4MX 440. Neither is cutting-edge, but will play Max Payne 2 just fine. Halo I'm not so sure *any* of these cards will do a great job with, but you should be able to play it at low res/low detail settings. If you're really trying to save money, these cards are your best bet.

suggest an mx440?!?!

::SLAPS FOREHEAD::

dont listen to this guy 🙂 get the 4200

yea, hes got an mx440 just laying around, hmm i wonder why (not really) anyway, he kind of wants to get this card on newegg so his entire list of system components can ship at once, would a radeon 9000 pro be a good card for him?

Why not try the MX440 to see if it suits him? Most cards ship for free @ NewEgg anyway, so ordering another card later shouldn't be too much of an extra expense.

mabye in bizaro world, anyway, should i tell him to get the Radeon 9000 pro, or the made by ATI radeon 9200? would either of those cards get the job done?

At the very least get a 9000 pro. The 9200 is garbage. The mx440 is too, but I understand if you're trying to use it up. A ti4200 would do a better job than any of the others though.

A local shop where I live still has Sapphire 128MB 9100?s. They are cheaper than a 9200 (non pro) and a lot faster. Might check a few local shops in your area. They should run about 65 - $70.

The 9600SE is one of the slowest graphics cards available. I wouldnt reccomend it to render quake 3, let alone a game made in the last 4 years.

Actually it's usually slower than a 9100 in addition to costing more.

OK, he says he wants dx9 compatability, so i'm clueless, I told him a ti4200 would be good, but he wants something more current, he was wondering if a geforce fx 5200u, or 5600u for $100, or $120 would be a good deal, I'm aware that these cards have their faults, but would either of those be cost effective, both cards are made by BFG.

If he wants cheap dx9 compliance, get him that $114 9600 pro from newegg. Anything less is a waste and won't run dx9 games anyways.
