stupid webhost (fixed)

One of my two domains quit working this week. It's hosted on a reseller's account along with my second domain (both on same reseller's account, get it?). However, one works one doesn't. This happened before. What do I get? I get asked to change my nameservers from ns1.predigio.net to some IP.

Uh... excuse me, but wtf is the purpose of a nameserver if people are dropping IP's into the nameserver slots for their domain hosts? When that happened, the guy who heads the host said that they'd fix it on their side since I can't put IP's in place of my DNS nameservers with the company I bought that domain from. It was fixed in a few days.

What happens? My domain goes down. First thing I do is trace route the domain. No propogation. So I go back to the domain registration company and the name servers are still correct. I go back to my webhost, and what do I get?

"Hi Nik,

I have just checked with domain and found it using the wrong NS.

Please change your NS IP to:
69.90.172.57 & 207.58.130.53.

Once DNS propagated, everything should be all good."

GRR!! I DON'T CONTROL THE NAME SERVERS! YOU give ME the name servers that I drop into the nifty magic little forms with the company I registered the domain through and it magically works within three days. If you want to change the IPs that the nameservers point to, that's YOUR job! Not mine!!

*phew*

I feel better now. But it still ain't working. 🙁

Unless I am misreading the above (which is completely possible), supposition would suggest your host and registrar are the same entity?

Better off with a registrar where you do control the nameservers, and can reassign the IP addresses to your private nameservers should the IPs change.

the HDD space is rented from Ultra Unix. Predigio.net, the working domain, is hosted through godaddy. The domain that's not working, ffmcobalt.com, is registered through dixiesys.com.

Speaking of name servers, IP's and such ... you seem to know a thing or two 🙂

I'm interested in using a third party DNS provider so my domains can propagate in LESS THAN 5 MINUTES instead of 24 hours. Do you know anything about that?

Can I comment?

Ah, understand now.

Strangely enough (many, many thanks to Ross), I have some space on UltraUnix as well. Dealing with Wong? A simple explanation of the situation to him might bode well for you. The man simply goes out of his way to make certain his clients are happy.

I switched domains this morning from a shared to a dedicated and then took a shower. By the time I got out the DNS was fully propagated.

Eric - Of course 🙂

My main question is ZoneEdit.com vs DNSMadeEasy.com

I'd rather go with DNSMadeEasy.com but ZoneEdit seems to have a well established reputation.

Out of those I go with ZoneEdit, but basically what I was going to say is with the amount of domains you have, a DNS service could get quite expensive, once you get past the free limit.

I know, that you know many established web hosts. What I would suggest to do if buy a web hosting package with WHM access and use that for your own DNS hosting. Just make sure the hosting company you choose has a proven >99.9% uptime record. Then contact the company and make sure that they would let you edit dns zones, and add dns zones, so you could use them for DNS hosting.

In my opinion you dont need a dedicated DNS only hosting company. Expecially since it costs them almost nothing, and they charge more for it than a cheap reseller account through a reputable host would cost you.

In WHM you can set up your own DNS zones, and do everything zoneedit can do with even a bit more functionality as you are editing the exact dns zones, and not relying on their web interface.

If you want me to explain a bit more contact me on AIM (havent seen you on in a while) and I'd be glad to give demo of how to do the same thing you do at zoneedit in WHM, in one of the accounts you have on my servers.

I respectfully defer to Devious, as he seems eager to answer (and not simply because I haven't an earthly idea on how to suggest a course of action for such).

Definitely some interesting information in several of the links provided on Gottadeal and WHT. Have fumbled through BIND out of necessity at times, but not to the extent necessary to give an informed and educated answer.

One of my "to learn" list topics.

Actually read about this in a thread on WHT (will have to search to find it, as I stupidly did not bookmark it).

It's an interesting concept.

Eric, thanks for the info.

Does DA offer a similiar "DNS Zones" setup?

From what I have been using of it, yes it does, but the one in cPanel has a lot better of a layout in my opinion. So, yes technically it does, its just not as easy to use in my opinion.

Well, I have. And this is the second time that we're going through this.

I never knew this. You're also a UU customer.

Small world.
