Stupid wasteful govt....

GoingUp

So I work for the govt, and we like to waste your money.

The sys admin was throwing out an old HP4 laser printer. I would have happily taken it and put it to use. Do I get to take it home and put it to use? Of course not. He pays a disposal company to come and haul it away. So instead of an employee putting old equipment to use for free, we wasted money to have someone else haul it away where it will go to waste.

Your tax dollars at work.

We do the same thing. We have about 25 (probably more) various CRT monitors stacked in a closet that have been replaced with LCDs. What are they going to do with the CRTs? Let them sit there indefinitely.

The IT people also want to sell us 130GB of space on thier file server for $2000.

Imagine all the paperwork they'd have to fill out if they gave away their equipment to employees.

If they are going to throw things away, have the employees cart the junk out to the dumpster. I was throwing some stuff out in our dumpster about 2 months ago and I found a like new 7 port USB hub that we threw away... why? No idea. Im giving it to my parents. Its just wasting crap like this that pisses me off.

That's common for government and large companies. Why do they do it?

Tax purposes (not an issue for gvt): Proving the items were destroyed/obsolete so they can be written off.
Theft: To prove that someone didn't steal the stuff.

Contact the disposal company ASAP. 6 pack should get you a "junk" HP4 printer that you can experiment with.

Hey Gobadgers,

MATC does the same thing. When I was going through my apprenticeship they were literally throwing about 100 PC's .I talked my teacher into letting me take a few of them off their hands 😀

Sysadmin

He got rid of it about a month ago without my knowing....

When we were remodeling the building, I found a box on the way to the trash with 5 TNT2 vid cards and about 8 Nics. I grabbed em all and have been giving them away to people when I upgrade their computers. Im not looking to get any of this stuff and sell it, I just dont want it to go to waste, especially after tax dollars paid for it.

That does sound like a waste...

My state's government has a surplus department where all agencies send their outdated equipment to be sold to the highest bidder. That money is then returned to the state budget.

This is probably done to keep people from stealing items by "disposing" of them, which you know some employees would do. Even auctions would allow this if co-workers were in on the scam: buy 20 fx5900 cards, "dispose" of them, everbody gets a fx5900 for $20.

Since about 50% of ATOT posters were willing to steal both an LCD and a plasma TV from Dell just because "they're a big rich company," you know people would steal even more form government agencies.

Stealing from the Government is kind of like stealing from a thief..kind of..well not really but it sounded good at the time🙂

sounds like the way to go
probably alot of trouble to convince someone to write legislation for it when about 9 people give a damn, sometimes i hate the government

other times i really really hate it...

I have heard of general "announcements" made by some companies that it "might" be a good idea to check the dumpsters during the night. Apparantly not so w/the govt.
