I just got shafted by Microsoft. My 360 Elite starting freezing without fail about a week ago (no RROD or E74). So being the idiot that I am, I recalled Microsoft saying they were extending the warranty on 360s out to 3 years. Unfortunately, I missed the part that said the 3-year warranty only applies to RROD or E74. So I called up Microsoft today to put together my repair claim, and when they asked me if I was getting a RROD or E74, not knowing any better, I said no. That's when they went, "Bend over, b!tch, you're not covered under warranty." And of course, now it's marked on that SN that I'm not getting the RROD, so I couldn't like back up and be like, "Well, actually..."

Anyways, once I found that out, I went ahead and just bought a new 360 Arcade, took the HD and wireless antenna from my Elite and just moved them over since it has HDMI now, essentially making it a hybrid Elite.

Ironically, my Elite was a Falcon (65nm CPU, 90nm GPU, 175w PSU), while this new Arcade is a Jasper (65nm CPU, 65nm GPU, 150w PSU). Still, I got screwed by my own honesty. Damn.

Hefty, Hefty, Hefty... wimpy, wimpy, wimpy...

You didn't really get shafted. MS extended the warranty for the common problems that were caused by design defects; 1 year is a pretty typical warranty for electronics, so applying that warranty to everything but the common defects is appropriate.

BUT don't assume that you won't get the RRoD just because you haven't yet. When I got my first RRoD, my Xbox froze before it RRoDed.

You weren't being honest. You just didn't realize you had to lie, because you obviously would have if you had known.

Ugh. My 360 froze like twice, a couple weeks ago. I got it a while ago, I don't recall exactly when but back when the PRO was $399. It was still quite a bit after they had come out though.

Now I'm worried that a RROD is in order...

NOOOOOOOOOO.

Well the good news is it would only be like $200 to get a new one. Better than $400 to get a new one.

M$ should repair 360's for ANY problems that arise due to their shitty rushed design. If they didn't give us the ability to install games to the HD, I'm pretty sure all of my discs would have been scratched to shit right now.

This.

The 360 is a piece of shit hardware wise, and they know it. Yet it still baffles me after what...5 revisions or so...they still cannot get it right?

Every piece of hardware has a evolution process. It took sony 5 revisions to get the PS2 right. The first PS2 was nothing but a paperweight, since thats about all it did well. The PS3 is at revision 3. It takes good engineering to shove an entire PC into a tiny box and yet make it bulletproof enough so that average jackass doesn't break it with stupidity, i.e. running it in enclosed spaces, running it on carpet,etc.. When you buy electronics its buyers beware. Anyone who builds computers knows that any number of things can come DOA, and we just deal with it accordingly. And even then sometimes shit happens. I feel bad that your hardware failed. The latest versions are way ahead of the shipping versions in reliability, so hopefully you won't have to go through it again.

Since your warranty is over, you might have thought of opening your 360 and blowing it out. It could have just been a heat issue. Dust accumulates over time, just like any PC and eventually its cooling potential goes down.

I was being honest in that I stated the truth about the issues my console was having. When asked if I had the RROD, I honestly replied that I did not. However, yeah, if I had known that they'd only repair it under warranty if it was RROD'd then I would have said it was RROD'd to hell and back. This F'd up Elite is my 3rd Xbox 360, and including the Core/Arcade/whatever I just bought, I am now my 4th system.

Would I have lied to save myself $99 in repair costs? Absolutely. I personally think I've given Microsoft enough of my money in the form of 360 console purchases, and I don't think it's too much to ask for my 360 to last longer than 13 months (I had the same, 1st Gen PSX from the time it came out until I bought my Xbox).

These new systems have incredible power (three 3.2GHz cores!), but that is something that should have been taken into account more fully when designing the enclosure. I would gladly suffer a slightly larger, more airflow-efficient console than deal with having to replace mine 3 different times.

I think Microsoft would have noticed that you lied about your 360 having a RROD or E74 when you sent it back in for repair. Just a hunch.

Besides, everyone knows that the extended warranty was only to cover the RROD and the E74 error. Every single PR statement on the matter clearly stated as much.

So basically, you're angry at Microsoft because you couldn't read the warranty and didn't lie to them to try and mooch a free repair? Okay...

Mine is a jasper I purchased last December. In the last month it has started freezing on me, and acting funny especially here in the last week. I guess a RRoD might be in my future.

I consider myself shafted by Microsoft because I have now owned four Xbox 360 consoles, three of which I paid retail for, and I think that's more than somewhat ridiculous. I am mad at them for not designing the system with properly. I am not mad at them because I missed the detail on the warranty, though I do feel like their extended warranty should cover system failures PERIOD rather than just certain issues given how prone these things are to failure.

Could I stop buying the system? Sure, I could get a PS3, but there aren't any exclusives on PS3 that interest me, and I prefer the Xbox controller and Live community.

You can call me a hypocrite if you wish, but as I said, I am the one that misread the warranty, and I blame myself for that, not Microsoft. I do, however blame them for building a system that consistently fails (at least in my experience) at 13-15 months when I owned the same PowerBook G4 (those ran very hot) for almost 6 years, the same PSX from launch until the original Xbox (which I had from launch up until the release of Gears Of War without issue), and my current MacBook is approaching its third birthday without a single issue.

It baffles me that after 5 revisions with constant failures, people still buy the console.

That's pretty much the only reason I haven't given up on the 360 (I do have a PS3 for exclusives though). If Sony comes up with a better controller design for the PS4... forget about it. For now I just buy my 360s at Costco so I don't have to deal with MS when they die.

Keep using that broken 360, it may still RRoD.
