Without laughing too hard, this is what I f'd up on. Was reinstalling window panel side and went to hook-up the side panel wire & neon light. Well, the power was still on, I dropped the wire in the 'puter case, saw a quick spark where it grounded out, and boom, the entire computer shut down and will not power up again. Could I have messed up the psu with such a low voltage short? Or the mobo? aaaarrrrrggggghhh. Thanks for any thoughts.

Hopefully just the PSU. Maybe there is a breaker/fuse inside the unit, or some other kind of protection...?

I would hope that the short did not cause a spike in voltage, because that could possible damage the MB.

Get the new PSU and see how it works.

Good luck!

Most likely a fuse in the psu. But dont attempt to change it unless you know how to properly discharge the unit. And no I will not tell you how to do it, much do dangerous for someone to attempt

Before giving up on the PSU, try unplugging it for a minute then pluggin it back in. Some have self resetting circuit breaker protection rather than fuses.

Oh, and the fuse JustaGeek speaks of is inside the PSU;)

LOL

Sometimes you might get people running around the house, trying to find a fuse or a breaker, you know...

No offense...

Thanks all. I took it to my local privately owned shop (they built the rig 6 years ago), & thought it was the psu also. They don't open the psu for the internal fuse, so they're going to install a new psu and call me tomorrow. If it needs a psu and mobo, I may finally can this 'puter, and build on that's on my wish list on Newegg.

And this be it. Any suggestions + or -??

well...you probably should have asked this in a new thread in General Hardware, but I would say...if this is a gaming machine you should go for at least a 320MB 8800GTS....it is about $120 more...but you could easily save money on your case and motherboard and PSU(you can get a $100 Corsair HX520 that would be enough for this system) to get that better GPU...also if you are getting an NZXT Zero...I really don't see any reason why you would need more case fans....it has 1 front 120MM fan...2 back 120MM fans and 4 side 120MM fans that would be blowing directly on the GPU and CPU...it also has a top 80MM fan(though most say it needs to be removed to fit the PSU)

All good suggestions, HOO. Will check those all out on newegg. btw, my original problem above was that when I shorted out the fan wire on the case, the UPS automatically shut down! Never thought of that on. Doubt I'll do that twice! Thanks
