I have a paragraph that is less than well written and I can't figure out how to fix it without introducing sentence fragments (at least according to MS Word) perhaps you can help. Don't pick the paper apart too much at this point as it is a rough draft, I'll update the thread as I complete the paper.

Here is the paragraph that is giving me trouble.

Patients report a wide verity of symptoms and feelings related to their hair pulling behaviors. These symptoms can be broken down in to three categories. These are the Pre hair pulling phase behaviors which includes the urge to pull the hair. The Active hair pulling behaviors, while hair is being pulled. And Post hair pulling behaviors.

Here is the paper.

Screw Fusetalk and its inability to maintain formatting.

Trichotillomania

Definition
Trichotillomania is defined as ?An impulse-control disorder characterized by repeated pulling out of one's hair (most often from the scalp, eyebrows, or eyelashes), resulting in visible hair loss, with an increasing sense of tension before pulling the hair, followed by pleasure, gratification, or relief after completing the act.? (Oxford University Press, 2009). Trichotillomania is also abbreviated as TTM and Trich.

Abstract
Trichotillomania is estimated to affect 2% to 5% of the global population. However ?some researchers believe that these numbers are underestimated because of the secretive nature of the disorder.? (Dia, 2008). Patients with TTM have been reported to experience both ?social and economic disadvantages related to having the disorder.? (Dia, 2008). There is currently no data that adjusts for the correlation of TTM patients as related to other psychological conditions present in those patients who also suffer from TTM. Many of the adverse symptoms of TTM are very similar if not identical to a number of other psychological conditions. This factor contributes strongly to this misdiagnosis of TTM, unfamiliarity with the disorder and a lack of understanding with regards to proper treatment.

Disorder related symptoms
Patients report a wide verity of symptoms and feelings related to their hair pulling behaviors. These symptoms can be broken down in to three categories. These are the Pre hair pulling phase behaviors which includes the urge to pull the hair. The Active hair pulling behaviors, while hair is being pulled. And Post hair pulling behaviors.

Some patients reported "playing" with their hair by rubbing or stroking it once it had been pulled (motoric). Some describe an "itch"-like sensation contributing to the urge to pull the hair. (sensory). Some patients pulled hair when bored. The hair pulling activity generally made them feel calm after the pulling (affective). Some patients maintain the belief that the only way to eliminate an itching sensation around the site of hair pulling was by pulling (cognitive). Patients generally experience similar consequences as a result of the hair pulling activity including, hair loss (physical), embarrassment (psychological), self views that they are abnormal (cognitive), and social avoidance (social). (Dia, 2008)

Stimuli that can result in the urge to pull ones hair are both external and internal influences.
? Environmental-a place where pulling typically occurs, such as in front of a bathroom mirror
? Motoric-simple motor habits, often without full awareness, that may predispose one to pull, like twirling or stroking the hair during sedentary activities
? Sensory-enjoying the sensations associated with the pulling of hair or with after-pull; self-simulating activities like nibbling on the hair root
? Affective-being calmed by or, conversely, energized by hair pulling
? Cognitive-"weeding out" unwanted hairs that are believed to be ugly or otherwise unacceptable
(Dia, 2008)

Treatment Approaches
?Evidence-based treatments that are available are considered only moderately effective (Elliott & Fuqua, 2000).The two main treatment approaches include cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRIs)? (Dia, 2008)

Components of the treatment model include self-monitoring so the client is able to become more aware of antecedents and consequences to the hair pulling. (Dia, 2008)

Related Adverse effects
Hair Eating
Trichobezoar
Social Phobia
Economic loss associated with hiding the disorder

The further you read the less coherent it gets. I'm still sorting everything out obviously but any guidance would, as always, be appreciated.

Just a quick try. You're missing a lot of subjects in your sentences so make sure you have a subject and verb.

I do plan on expanding on all aspects of the behaviors. Thanks for pointing out that I missed a section.

First revision, preserving as much of your original writing as possible:

Patients report a wide variety of (physical? mental? qualifying adjective would be nice here) symptoms and (emotional? psychological?) feelings related to their hair pulling behaviors. These symptoms (a synonym would be preferable here to avoid repetitive word choice) can be broken down into three categories-- pre-, active-, and post- hair pulling.

Having an ordered list of prefixes is perfectly acceptable and no further explanation is needed. Further explanation should be limited to how those symptoms manifest themselves.

Honestly, I think the entire paragraph is poorly worded. You could rewrite it as a single sentence

Patients report symptoms and feelings related to hair pulling before, during, and after the act.
Follow up this topic sentence with
Leading up to a hair pulling episode, patients report feeling X. More explanation, details, etc
During the hair pulling episode, Y. More details
Afterwards, patients have experienced Z. More details

Be brief if at all possible, and elaborate where necessary

Battling a pretty good headache at the moment, will try to continue this effort once the pain subsides.
