Just loaded windows 7 ultimate & all my programs/files etc etc you know the drill, come home from some errands and pull my computer out of sleep & locks up.

turn it off, back on, no hard drive detected in the bios nowhere!!!, pulled the drive, hooked up via usb>sata adapter and it powers up just nothing else.

500gb barracuda 7200.11 , guess there was a problem with these drives after some research, same thing happened to tons of people. 18 months and now its a brick!!!

oh well, had to venture to a Best Buy & upgraded to 1TB WD Black drive and just reloading everything now...

cliffs:
1. dont buy seagate harddrives

2. WD ftw.

I've never had an issue with Seagate.

I'll never use a WD, as those have really let me down over the years. Funny, ain't it?

Pretty easy to fix if it is the firmware issue. I had one do that, fixed it, and am still using it.

yeah, i believe i got the tool online for my 7200.11 and it flashed in a few minutes. has been working ever since.

I had to get a small breadboard, an RS232 connector and some jumpers. It was actually a fun project, kind of reminded of my early days working with PC's. It boiled down to connecting to the internal service console of the drive, telling the controller board to spin down the drive, and while it was still powered on remove a piece of cardboard that I had inserted between the controller board and the drive motor contacts. There was a site that detailed exactly what to do and in the end I had a working drive with all my data. Also I believe if the drive is one of the affected ones Seagate will recover it for you at no charge if the data is really important to you.

Ick. I hate Seagate. I have had 3 1TB drives fail on me.

Western Digital is all I buy these days.

My 320GB 7200RPM Seagate has been running flawlessly for a few years now.

I've had all brands of HD die on me, at least 2-3 of each. So I hate them all equally.

Same here. Every single drive that's died under my care(4 or 5) have been WD. I won't buy them.

I've had Seagates fail and WD drives fail. With the Seagates they were covered by warranty, with the WD's it was tough luck pal, 1 year warranty.

I had one of the 1.5TB drives that died on me after about 5 months use. I stuck it in the freezer over night and it's been running ever since, about 8 months now. I don't trust any real data to it but it's still churning along.

I've owned every brand of drive and had them all fail on me countless times.. just the nature of the medium.

My seagate just took a dump, my WD Black came in yesterday and now I have to rebuild my whole fucking machine. Tons of fun.

lol join the club, i just got finished reloading win7 and all my shit...what a PITA.

but on the other note, i'm gonna stick it in the freezer and see if it helps at all lol, but not sure if that helps considering its probably a firmware fail.
