So I got a bad hard drive from Seagate, but their return policies stipulate that I have to return it in an electro-static resistant bag, then encase it in 2" of foam rubber, and then put it in a box. It also states that the bag can't have the seal removed. So, that means I have to not only find a bag to buy (and some foam rubber), but I also have to have one with a seal attached. Does anyone have any idea where I can get these bags?

sounds like they mean the bag it came in, probably to prove it's a retail drive and not oem.

do they have the RMA policy that enables you to put your credit card on file, and then they send you a replacement harddrive (in the recommended packaging), and you can use that to mail your defective harddrive back? that's how i usually handle my maxtor RMAs.

But they have the serial number, and I KNOW that they can tell from that that it's a retail drive because that's how I got my rebate.

I don't know, but I was going to try that too.

Seagate offer express RMA's. You can also purchase the shipping box from them. I've did both in the past.

SWEET! I don't suppose you have a link to that information, do you? I scoured their site and couldn't find anything.

Okay, now that you solved that problem how are you going to get rid of all the porn on the drive before you send it back? :D

Why yes I do.

You could also try Uline. Our company buys antistatic bags and some other packing supplies from them. Reasonably priced but more for the bulk buyer. But if you plan on shipping quite a few things in the near or distant future, it maybe worthwhile.

eh, they have the option for you to put the replacement drive on your credit card, and refund when they recieve the defective part....I've done it lots of times with all of the top 3 hdd manufacturers.

edit: use the packaging from the new part to send the old back

I had to buy packaging to RMA a drive once to meet IBM's policy. It cost me about $12 to have an "appropriate" box shipped to my house.

Having worked somewhere that dealt with hardware RMAs, I can understand why HD companies do this. HDs are fairly easily damaged is shipped poorly. No matter what you tell people, they will send in hardware in pretty much anything they can get their hands on :( People would stuff $300 items in non padded envelopes and send then in for testing. Also, there is the classic of throwing items into HUGE boxes with absolutely no padding. Just parts floating around in the box, banging into each other...

Wow. I nominate mcvickj most helpful person on ATOT that I've seen today. That should offset the unhelpfulness that I have incited by arguing in the cat allergy thread. Thank god the world is still in balance.

Is there any drive manufacturer that actually pays for your return shipping? I remember that dell does (or used to do) that when you send back defective parts.

I usually have some packaging materials around, but, I generally buy a new drive and then try and RMA the old drive after. Typically when it's being RMA'd it's an old drive anyway so not worth much to put back into the same PC, especially when an upgrade can be had for <$50-60.

I can always find a home for the RMA'd drive later.

Lately I haven't had to do this much, as most of the warranties are 1yr so they don't qualify for RMA any longer. Seagate being the recent exception.
