So I'm trying to get a phone that supports wifi w/o I data plan. I know the Blackberry Pearl 8120 allows you surf the net through wifi without a data plan.

Will the 8G Iphone 3G do the same? Both are selling for about $100 on craigslist, not sure which one to get.

Suggestions? TIA!

You'd have to contact your provider to put a block on data services from their side, but considering the iPhone can surf WiFi in Airplane mode, I don't see why it wouldn't be able to without a data plan.

If you're on AT&T however, you're going to have a heck of a time arguing with them to drop the data plan. It'll probably be easier with T-Mobile.

As Mr. Pork said, the iPhone can definitely surf the internet over WiFi only, you can use it over wifi without even the SIM card installed, but it's hard to get AT&T to let you use it without the data plan.

And, as mentioned, T-Mobile doesn't care either way. You can do voice only with them. I used it this way for 6 months or so.

One of the few reasons T-mobile is so nice. T-mobile and Spriny are the only groups that still has a 29.99 voice plan and T-mobile doesn't require data packages on anything, not even Blackberry's or Google Phones. And since so many phones have wi-fi you can still get the benefits of hi-speed data.
BEWARE!
Many of their wi-fi capable phones only use the wi-fi for voice calls, nothing else. My Nokia 6301 was like that. Voices sounded clean and clear but all data was 1X. If you go to the store (a proper store, not a mall kiosk) they have little signs above the phones saying what each of them is capable of.
