Would it be possible/ethical/against-the-terms-of-service-of-this-board-to-discuss redistributing the install file? I mean, obviously owners of ATI GPUs have a right to it, it is just that ATI's distribution system utterly fails...

Well, I've read it's just not the download which is protected, but the actual install. You'd have to get someone to create a .bin\.cue file of the ATI cd for it to work. Way to go, ATI :(

Ah ha, I got this info from the Rage3D forums:

"As long as you have DVD software that supports DXVA, the AVIVO video processing will work." as well as "And PowerDVD 6 already has a codec for DVD that supports DxVA and works very well with ATI cards, you just need to make sure "hardware acceleration" is enabled."

Considering there isn't any thing else offered by Cyberlink besides the h.264 codec, and that quote came from a Firingsquad article, it's safe to say the image enhancements for DVDs are also there.

Woops...I forgot about that. Brain fart. :)

I believe there are lots of codecs that implement the ATI DVD image enhancements.

It appears you just need the generic dxva support for AVIVO to function on DVDs. Now if only the h.264 codec didn't cost $15.

for playback of h264 you can just use quicktime 7. I dont see why you would pay for cyberlink.

all you need to do is set up avivo in the control center, and it should take off a huge load off your cpu when playing. for dvd, does your cpu really struggle playing dvds? mine doesnt, i see no need for mpeg2 accelleration.

Quicktime7 doesn't support H264 acceleration, so you'll need a beefy CPU to decode 1080p. Cyberlinks H264 decode takes a load off the CPU and uses the X1xxx hardware to assist the decoding.

i see

yes it does :) http://www.apple.com/quicktime/technologies/h264/faq.html

I think you are confused. You do indeed need a beefy CPU to play back 1080p h.264 in quicktime. With ATIs solution, more work is done on the GPU itself.

Thanks for that info, I had thought perhaps that was correct, but I've only seen the ATI Cyberlink actually tested (anadtechs recent AIWx1900 review recently)

I'd like to get the HQV disc and test some of these decoders now, and see how they fare.

I agree about the cost of Cyberlinks H264 decoder as well. I finally have it working well on my new build, but because there is no way to change MPEG4 decoders in WMP10, its a big issue if you have other mpeg4 decoders installed. Basic feature support should be "free" with the purchase of the card, just like DVD decoding.

You still don't get image enhancement directly with DXVA do you? I have been confused on this as well.

RadLight Filter Manager

Unless you mean for WMP10 only you can use that to set your favorite MPEG-4 decoder to the highest merit (all DS auto-filter-graph apps will use the highest merit one). For WMP10 only you could have a proxy bat file to unregister other MP4 decoders then reregister on WMP10 exit.

That's a real PITA for simply wantig to use a specific h264 decoder in WMP10 and then ffdshow for MPEG4. They should have provided a utility like MS DVD decoder utility to configure DVD decoders for MCE.

If I have issues with it, the average user is going to have significant issues if they have any other Mpeg4 decoders installed. With the codec packs being so popular, thats a virtual guarantee of problems.

This is not a beta decoder either, its a retail product thats "required" to advantage a basic hardware feature that IMO, should be free w/purchase of the supported video card. My trial expired on my otherbuild before actually ever getting it to work properly outside of Graphedit, my new build will be expiring soon. Thankully I have the ability to decide whether it's worth it or not. My X2 processor makes software decoding a possiblity however.
