stupid question

ok, i am having a slight problem with my home network. i have 3 PC's sharing a DSL connection through a Linksys 5 port etherfast switch. they all share the connection perfectly. i am usually also able to connect to any of the computers and transfer files etc. with it, but as of late it's been very picky. sometimes they will show up in Netowork Neighbourhood, and sometimes it won't. the third computer is my new box and i want to transfer files from the old one to this one, except it can't find the shared folder. i can ping any of the computers, and if i do a start>find computer i can find them. what do i have to have turned on or loaded which i may have missed or somehow turned off to transfer files? i checked and the folder is shared, and i have file sharing on both of them. what am i missing?

Since you can ping the computers then just map them.

Right-click on Net. Neighborhood and select Map...
Set the path to \\computer name for each computer

When you do a start find and find it, right click on it and select map drive. Once you do that make sure the reconnect at each login is selected. You should be set.

i tried mapping using the IP and it gave me the same error

on this one i can't find the computer doing a start>find computer, but i can find this one if i use the other one. this is confusing

what should my WINS/DNS settings be? this is just a small home lan with the 3 computers.

I would wipe the ip stack on all machines setup TCP/Ip and give each a static IP. If that does not work fall back on NetBeui.

excuse my ignorance but what do you mean by wiping the IP stack? and i have given them all static IP's,

169.254.0.3 <---this machine
169.254.0.2 <----the machine i'm trying to connect to

he means either removing tcp/ip in the network neighborhood properties or running WINPCFG and reseting your IP address'. Either way will reset your IP stack and allow you to debug further.
