Stupid question, what is the average U.S. Tax rate?

I cant seem to get a direct answer to this, I'm trying to figure out how much money I need to live on my own.

I live in California if that matters.

Income or sales? If its income then there's nothing like average tax rates. It all depends on where you live. There is federal tax, social security and medicare that everyone has to pay all over US. Then you have the local state, city, county ans so on taxes that totally depends on where you live and how much you make.

Most people with a decent income are probably in the 17-20% total tax burden I imagine. I think I'm in the 18% range.
