Legally, you could write a check on a napkin, and as long as it satisfies the legal requirements, it is valid and should be cashed.
That's true, but most banks require you to use checks that meet certain specifications as part of your customer agreement. i.e. they must have the routing and account numbers printed with magnetic ink at the bottom.
Have you ever read the story of the guy who cashed one of those bogus prize checks they send you in the mail (something like $95,000) in an ATM, then later found out that it was a legally valid check?
