How the hell can one car speed up and another car behind it slow down yet the car behind it still gains on the car in front of it? I don't get it.

The Front Car is going 40 and the back car is going 60, The front car speeds up to 45 and the back car slows down to 50.

the car behind had a higher initial velocity.

o_O Please don't tell me that is what amounts to physics at your school. That amounts to 'not being stupid' in my book.

hehe

in NY on the State wide physics test that ever HS student is required to take at the end of the the year, they round gravity to 10 m/s/s because its easier to do the math that way

So car A is in front and is going 30 mph. Car B is in back and is going 50 mph. Car A speeds up to 35 mph while Car B slows down to 45mph. Car B is therefore still gaining on Car A.
That should work based on the info you supplied... if the cars must be going the same speed at the start... well then... *Shrug*

car one@ t(0) : 20mph
car two@ t(0) : 40mph

car one@ x(0) : 100m
car two@ x(0) : 0m

In this scenario, since hte car in the rear has a higher initial velocity, it can be said that if they remain at the same speed, without accelerating, then the car in the rear will catch up to the car in the front

If the car in the front is speeding up and the car in the rear is slowing down, you would have to calculate their changes in velocity at certain coordinates. That said, if the data allows for it, the car in the rear might still be going faster at a given point than the car in the front, for example, if they are changing velocity, acceleration negatively, slowly

Oh, and if your physics teacher ever tells you that "air resistance" is proportional to velocity and not velocity^2, tell him he's an idiot.
