A week ago I pulled up on the side of the street to park in downtown St. Louis. I don't see a "NO Parking" sign, only a sign that says

"No Parking Every 1st and Third Wednesday <-- -->"

I parked right under the sign, on a thursday. Car was there for 5 minutes or less. Come back out to it and a nice $25 NO PARKING ticket. wtf

I'm contesting it. As much as I hate to waste the time, they can't have a parking cop laying undeserved parking tickets on cars, whether it was intentional or not.

Fast forward to yesterday. I had monthly garage parking downtown because up until the end of last month, I was living downtown. My parking was good until the 10th. It was $100 per month. I moved to just outside the city, close to the metrolink and plan to take that everday instead of driving downtown. But for the next few days I need my car (still moving some random stuff) and it also needs to be taken to the body shop to finish up on my repairs from hitting a deer.

So I decide I'll just park at an open, public $2 per day lot. It has one of those honor pay systems, just small slots where you slide change/bills into, and the parking space number is labeled on the appropriate slot. I pull in yesterday morning, get a good spot, go put $2 in the slot, and go on about my day.

I come back to get my car after work, and a "No Pay" parking ticket is laying on my windshield. Granted, this isn't a city ticket, it's a "central parking systems" ticket.

Charge is "No Payment on $3.00 lot".
Fine - $13

Warning says payment must be made in 5 days or car will be booted next time seen on any Central Parking lot.

WTF? The put my license plate down wrong though. Slightly mispelled.

I called the number, and it says you can mail the ticket in with an explanation of why you want to contest it, but if they don't accept your appeal they will double the fine and boot your car immediately the next time it is on their lot.

I have expensive rims for one, so if anybody boots my car when I don't deserve it, I'm going to freak out. Two, this was the FIRST time I parked in this lot in over 4 years. The very first day I'm given a bogus ticket. Is this the obvious signs of a racket?

Ugh.. I swear if they try and collect on this or boot my car, I'm going to get some spray glue and glue spray all of the slots so they can't collect anything.

No way! Fuck that place. I'm going to write a nice short letter explaining that I paid, their ticket is bogus, and they'll never collect from me.

I'd be pretty irked as well. I once had my car booted in a similar situation (although I paid an actual attendant); had to wait 30-45 minutes for the booter to come back to the lot and remove the device after calling and explaining to him that I wasn't parked inappropriately.

Is it possible you left the money in the wrong space/slot? I've done that before myself, and only realized my mistake after a friend caught the error.

I'll wait for the "My car got booted" post.

If it was a $3 lot and you only paid $2; then you are in violation.

Only options are to pay the fine (your fault) or never park within their system again to prevent being booted.

On the city parking ticket - if the date on the ticket is on Thursday you can fight it.
If the date on the ticket is on Wed; then you would have to show that you received the ticket on a Thursday instead of the day that they have on the ticket.

To do that you would have to show the sequence of ticket timestamps from the book and find that your ticket would have been back dated.

I was in Columbus Ohio and I got a parking ticket for not paying the meter.... which I had paid and had 40 minutes still on it when I got back to my car.

At least I can afford to pay the random ticket and haven't sunk low enough in my life that I have to get back at successful people by dropping frivolous tickets on their cars.

HAH! Yes, it says No Pay $3.00 Lot

But on the actual payment board, it clearly says "$2.00" lot. So it's wrong on the ticket.

Well, contesting the city ticket should be easy. They should have the day cited written on the ticket. If you were parked there last Wednesday, you're responsible (No parking 1st Wednesday of the month for the whole street....street sweeping most likely). If not, then you're off. Their ticket books should have carbon copies.

Good luck with the parking co. You'll say you paid, they'll say "nuh-uh!"...you'll get collected on. End of story.

My time and mental energy are not worth a couple cheap parking tickets. I'd pay them off and move on with your life.

I cannot say I have heard anyone contesting a parking ticket and winning...

I did :)

I parked my car downtown in a lot with a friend and her car as well (so we had 2 cars). We went to a club next door.

The pay system was a little wacky. You needed 3 tickets to park. Each ticket was $1. To get a ticket, you'd put your credit card into a machine, pull it out, and it'd charge you $1 and spit out 1 ticket. Do this 3 times and you have 3 tickets to park.

When I got there, there was a note from someone saying that the ticket machine wasn't working. A few people were there, swiping credit cards and some got tickets and some didn't. I tried my card and got a ticket on the first try, but not the second, third, or fourth. There was no feedback from the machine other than the ticket spitting out so I had no idea if it was charging me or not.

It took 7 swipes to get 3 tickets. My friend didn't have a credit card at that time so I gave those tickets to her, then did another 8 swipes to get 2 tickets for myself. At this point I was getting a bit nervous of paying way too much, and after several more swipes, I decided to stop.

I displayed the 2 tickets on my car. I came out to find a ticket.

I disputed the ticket and mentioned the note, that I swiped my card 8 times to get those 2 tickets, and continued swiping to no avail. I didn't mention anything about my friend or those tickets as that really had no bearing on my own situation. They sent me back a bit of a snarky letter saying that they were accepting my reasoning, considering that I had paid $2 and did it in good faith, but that I should have called them, waited for an attendant, and then paid full price (like I'm gonna hang out in a parking lot for an hour at night for some guy to show up).

The nice thing is if push came to shove, I could have faxed them my credit card bill which came 2 weeks later in the mail, showing that I had in fact paid $5.

There was a tow company around here (Portland) that tried towing people frivolously and extorting money from them to get their cars back. Either one or both of the owners got arrested I believe. Never heard if they received a jail sentence (I imagine they did though).

Towing and parking companies are the slime of the earth, and are not above the law.

$13? I don't know whether I'd contest it or not; it would depend on my mood. The *right* thing to do is contest it, and make yourself as big a pain in the ass as you possibly can. If everybody did the *right* thing, this kind of nonsense would stop, and they'd be damned certain any fines were justified.

Reminds me of that HOA parking/cars getting booted story that happened somewhere in the southwest. The one where the guy put his booted car up on rollers and pushed it in to his garage. Then the booting co. threw a fit and started booting every car in the community.
