I'm looking at building a new System, leaning towards an ASUS MB, and I've been digging through these Forums and can't quite find the answer I'm looking for.

Can I just change the CPU Multiplier to up its performance - SD 3700+ @ 2200 to say 2400-2500 ? I'm assuming this would be changing it from 11x to 12-12.5x.

I don't really want to mess with RAM timings or FSB (or HTT whatever) and I'm really confused on what affects what on these A64s. I'd like to leave the RAM as DDR400 with the 3200XLs I have at 2-2-2-5.

I don't have any of the new stuff yet (except RAM in a XP2000 333bus system).

On a side note. This has got to be one of the worst batch (nForce4) of MBs to choose from that I've ever seen ! They all have some kind of problem/stablity issues 🙁

Unless you get an A64 FX-5x series CPU, multipliers are locked upwards, so to OC, you have to raise the HTT.

I wouldn't likely recommend an Asus mobo personally.

The Epox 9NPA+Ultra is likely the best value for an OCing mobo at the moment, with the non-Platinum MSI Neo4 right behind.

For the serious OCer, the DFI Lanparty UT Ultra-D is the obvious choice.
 
Now I'm even more confused. I know the 4000+ is locked, but I thought I saw on one of these threads that the San Diego 3700+ wasn't locked ?

I was hoping to just get the 3700 and bump it up to a 4000 or little more and save a few $$$.

MB's are still a hard choice. I've been looking at MSI (have good experience with) and ASUS (had one before), and possibly DFI. They all seem to have issues. I'm seem to be relegated to getting the A8N-SLI Premium just because it doesn't have the stupid fan that's giveing everyone fits.
 
All non-FX A64s are locked upwards. Final answer; no exceptions.

OCing to 4000+ speeds is easy though.

Set LDT to 4x (down from 5x).
Set HTT to 219.
You might have throw in a RAM divider to do that, or slightly loosen your timings, but not likely, since it's good RAM you've got.

It's really not that hard 🙂


 
Okay, so I know that HTT(FSB)xHT multiplier <=1000. I believe HT is the LDT you're talking about - I'm using what info I found from an ASUS Manual I downloaded trying to figure out if I could do what I wanted.

How is the CPU speed determined ?
 
Thanks all, this helped with what I just found on another thread.

If understand things correctly now I could set HTT(FSB)=240, HT(LDT)=4, DDR=333 (5/6 Mem divider) and get:

CPU @ 2640 with Memory running at 200 Mhz (DDR 400) keeping my 2-2-2-5. Hyper Transport would equal 960, not sure how much difference this would be versus 1000.

You got it figured out already 😀

Also, don't worry about HT frequency (aside from keeping it below 1000 for stability).
It has almost no effect on performance at all.

It's very likely you'll make it to 2.6 GHz, & most likely, even a bit better 🙂
