I have a new mobo on the way with raid. I'm needing more HD space anyway so I thought this might be cool to try. I have a 7200 rpm 20 gig drive. If I add another, will I have approx. 40 gig with Raid?

Anyone know of any good raid setup and info sites for a newbie?

Thanks

If you do RAID 0 yes it will double the size of your HD. You should try and get the same model HD, to minimize any problems. You can try Paul's KT7 FAQ page, it refers to how to set up RAID on the highpoint 370 controller, cluster sizes and all.

Is it possible to install the raid setup along with a third drive so that I can transfer old data to the extra drive when I restripe the primary two drives to setup the raid?

I know on the highpoint controller you can have 2 drives setup in RAID and at the same time have 2 individual drives on the same controller (i.e. drive c is the RAID, drive d is one drive, drive e is the other). With the promise controller I don't know, you'll have to check the documentation, but if I had to guess I'd say the same applies.

the same can be said of the promise card. having a single drive defined as an array means it's not changed.

what i would recommend is this: back up your current drive, with ghost or something using the motherboard's IDE controller(s).

then RAID, and restore using that spare HDD.

if you do not have a 3rd HDD, i hope you have a burner.

i have succesfully used ghost for my RAID 0 array as well as my singular drive array... i have 3 drives on my promise raid controller.

there are lots of primers, a simple search and you will find a lot of answers.
