Stupid newb component set question

Quick question, this is a total newbie question: on component sets, well vehicles with component speakers installed, can you just replace the speaker itself without replacing the tweeter and crossover?

I assume you mean the midbass, as a component set is comprised of a midbass driverm tweeter and crossover.
Assuming this is what you want...
Easy answer...Yes
Hard answer...Depends. You'd need to factor in driver efficiency, crossover point, driver frequency response, driver power handling and mounting dimensions to select a good replacement unless you use a same type driver for the replacement.

Oops, yea the midbass. It'd be a temporary solution for a few months until I get the money to buy a good component set. (Swap out the current Infiniti's in my old car to replace the crap paper cone speakers in my new one) Would that cause any electrical or other problems?

Well, the only damage that could happen would be to the driver itself assuming the driver you choose has less power handling then the current one. But, I think you should be fine, no worries.

By driver I assume you mean the midbass? (Sorry, my knowledge of audio terms is next to nothing ) The crap stock speakers are like 15w min, 30w max. IIRC, the Infiniti's are 50 or 75rms, 140 peak.

Gotcha. Shouldn't the majority of drivers be 4 ohms? That's the only impedence I've seen on car speakers. (The stock and Infiniti's are both 4)

Yes, unless you do a home driver for the replacement, in which case it could be 6 or 8 ohms.
