stupid n00b question re: SIM cards

So this is a stupid question, but I've never really been into details of how cell phones work.

I have a 5 year old GSM phone from Cingular (a Nokia 3595 I believe). It's about dead, and I want to get a new phone. I have no desire to renew a contract with AT&T or anything. Can I just buy a new unlocked GSM phone and move the SIM card over, and that's all I have to do? Are there any... I don't know, compatibility problems with SIM cards and different phone models? Especially since my current one is so old. I think I read somewhere that I could go to an AT&T retail store and get a new SIM for free/cheap if I needed one.. would I need to do that to get a newer type of card to work in a newer phone?

Yep, that's all you need to do.

- Get unlocked GSM phone
- Insert SIM card
- ...
- Profit

Doesn't have to be unlocked just has to be AT&T or Unlocked 🙂

Although the old cingular sims might not work in new phones.

Solution, drop down to your local ATT and they will replace it for free with a new one.
