Ok, I've currently got 2 PCs (finishing my server on wednesday). This server is the first PC I've build. It's been a learning experience. Problem is, now I'm hooked:) Well it's not a problem. Ok, to the question.

I got a Compaq computer for Christmas. My question is can I upgrade the mobo in that to an ASUS A7M266? Would my HHD, floppy, CDROM, CDRW, and everything just cross over? I'm thinking of buying an Antec case but for now would I be ok with just throwing that board in my current case?

no u cant put the asus board in the compaq case...i think compaq uses proprietary mboard designs...ie my old compaq from way back when had a back plane for all the cards while the other half had the processor chipset and what not.

If they've changed that...then you should be able to, otherwise i am thinking that once u get ur antec case then u should be able to transfer all the peripherals to that with ur new mb...

So I guess I'll just get the Antec case and put a ton-o-fans in there first. All of the other things did come with the Compaq. Would that present a problem?

All the drives and cards will work fine with a new motherboard. The Compaq mobo in the Antec case I'm not sure but I think it should be fine.

Yeah I don't see why that would cause a problem. Maybe I'll build up my case first till I'm ready for a new mobo and an Athlon4:)
