What is Airplane! a spoof of?
Movies like Robinhood: Men in Tights, and Spaceballs are good spoofs. All the ones we see nowadays like Disaster Movie, Scary Movie, and all the others are just bad spoofs.
 
Dumb and Dumber is my favorite in this category.

and since I assume no one has mentioned it: Top Secret! the dark horse of the Zucker Brothers canon (Airplane!, Naked Gun, et al) is just as good, if not better than the others.

neckbeard is correct. I thought this was obvious. Could be that many young people these days only saw Airplane! much later in life, and didn't realize how big disaster movies were when it was released (kinda like the saturation we experienced a few years ago).

There were a few airplane disaster movies at that time, as well. Then, the late 70s Steve McQueen or Charlton Heston disaster movies. When Airplane! was new, it was well understood by the common moviegoer of the day that it was spoofing a contemporary trend.
