Stupid Memorex CD-R's

First of all, Memorex can't make CD-rom drives worth anything. My old Memorex 40x really sucks with a high wind-up/wind-down time.

Now I have a Creative 52x drive. It seems to hate me for buying Creative. I loaded in a Memorex 700mb CD-R, and halfway through copying the contents onto my hdd the CD-R breaks.

I get a "Can't read CD-ROM" blue screen, and as I hit eject flying bits of the stupid CD-R start flying out. Obviously there are some pieces still stuck inside the CD-rom drive that I can't get out and my drive door won't close, i.e. my CD-rom doesn't work anymore.

I'm just asking, shouldn't I be liable for a replacement CD-rom drive from Memorex since their media technically screwed up my CD-rom drive? *argh* I don't want to buy _another_ CD-rom drive.

Try removing the shell and cleaning out the pieces. It may be worth the trouble.

Tauren: I've removed the shell and shook all the pieces of the CD-R out. The drive bay closes and opens just fine. Now the problem is that the motor doesn't even work. *sigh*

Sounds like it's dead. But hey, these things are REALLY cheap so don't despair.

Yes, relative to other parts in the computer a normal CD-rom drive is cheap. However, I'm in college and I don't exactly have that much spending money. It doesn't help it either when I brouse the hot deals forum too, heh. I sent e-mails to both Creative and Memorex asking them for support/compensation in any form. Bleah.

After a couple days I finally received a reply. From Memorex I got a response that I need to send snail mail to the corporation before I can expect anything.

From Creative, I got an RMA # but I've already removed the shell off of my CD-rom. There was a "warranty void" sticker and I removed it w/o breaking it, but it does look like tampering's been done. Hope they don't spot it.
