gf's sister was griping to her friend about how they were getting the hand-me-down cars of the family. they all want fancy-pants newness to try and trick-out or some such nonesense. so this friend of hers says:
"well, i've been thinking...i got this idea. how fast you think id have to go to total the car my parents are giving me? then they'd have to buy me a new one, right?"

holy s!
wtf is wrong with this kid? when i was in high school it was a godsend simply to have a car...why is it such a big deal to these kids that they are willing to risk life and limb for something their friends will drool over?

I'd tell him to run it straight into a wall... and not to wear a seatbelt.

yeah, i dont want to sound old with the "in my day" but i dont remember anyone giving a crap about the kind of car someone had in HS. i went to school in northern nj and this girl is in western md...so...maybe its just the area...
but i cant imagine teenagers caring that much about anything.

although, i spose i was in high school coming off of the whole grunge thing...so...being apathetic and unimpressed was pretty standard. maybe their generation isnt lacking in thinking, mine was just lacking in motivation...

kids now are all about image and material things, why else are they all wearing their abercrombie and fubu clothes.

I had a 89 olds moblie cutlas as my 1st car, it had 140K miles on it, had a messed up cylinder, and no a/c or heat.

it all depends on what friends around them have. If you atteneded beverly hills high school and got some crap car, people will look down on you as most cars in parking lot where benz, bmw, lexus, acura etc

Because as we all know, unless you're Popular and Well-Loved by your High-School Fair-Weather Friends, your life is Meaningless and your should Kill Yourself at the Earliest Possible Convenience.

If I handed down a decent, good runnig car to one of my kids, and he or she totaled it, would I buy the kid a new one? Hell no!!! If insurance paid out $3000 to me on it, the kid's getting a car that costs $3000 or less. Hell, maybe even $2000 or less, and than I'd keep the other $1000 for myself, just to remind myself what sh!++y drivers kids are.

EDIT: Just thought about it, and I couldn't keep the extra $1000. That would need to go toward the exciting new skyrocketed insurance premium.

No, they're ungrateful morons. You give them something, and it's never enough. They always want more, want something else, and want it now. I think parents are to blame for kids being like that.

*sigh*

Those kids really make us new drivers look like crap. I'm 15, 16 in about 5 months and I'm just glad I'll have a car. I'll be getting a stick shift Honda Accord 91 or some year near that. Thats good enough for me. Sure, if I had the money I'd like a better car but just turning 16 and having a car that day as a gift is one of the greatest gifts ever. My dad seems to be cool with me driving and he says that he understands the freedom it gives me.

I can see why they are looking for new cars but when you start off, usually you don't start with a ferrari or something. Usually you start with something that wouldn't be a big loss were you to damage it. She should be happy she has a car IMO...

I had a POS car and I always wanted a nice one, even in 1998. In retrospect I should have been grateful for getting a free car, even if it was 13 years old, but kids suck and are often ungrateful. But I was never that stupid as to want to almost kill myself. Just be happy you're smart and she's not.

And people do sound old when you say the whole, back in my day I didn't care about cars. More likely you knew people that did want nice cars, even in 1991 or whenever you grew up. You're probably just one of the well grounded persons that didn't care.

My car collection:
1978 Buick Centruy (grandfather's, eventually given to my brother)
1988 Dodge Ram Charger (father's, eventually sold)
1987 Chevy El Camino (bought from my grandfather for $700, currently purring like a kitten).

I've been driving for over 5 years, 0 tickets, 0 accidents. I've taken care of every car I've had because each one was important, not because of how they looked but because having a car sure beat walking.

If I have a child that doesn't understand that basic principle, they simply aren't getting a car. I don't care about the "but I need one to be cool" argument. Its not a status symbol, regardless of what someone's moronic friends may think. Its a mode of transportation.

i do not agree with you. At the age 16 having expensive car makes you look cool around your friends and it also make you look rich if you get expensive enough of a car.

Dude car doesn't matter.

I'm 18, and it never mattered to me nor my friends.

I know this dude who's parents bought him a 2001 or some newer year infiniti qx4. He was pissed because it was a base model. (I think there were only two options.. 4wd and heated seats.) he had neither.

So he totalled it. And you know what he got? His dad bought him a 1987 honda accord.

He deserved it.

If I have kids, and they total a car, I wouldn't buy them a nice one at all. hell, I had to pay for every car I have ever owned.
