At 6am (when rush hour is beginning its peak), I'm running late, I already waited through 4 people before the check writer, and they didn't bother to fill out any of the information or get their stuff ready before getting to the counter and then proceed to order 2 dozen lotto tickets with numbers they have been playing for 60 years I can be that impatient.

I hate it when I go to buy some things and the person rining me up is talking to another employee the entire time, does not smile, does not greet me, does not seem to care at all or gives me bad looks because he/she is having a bad day. I don't want special treatment or a red carpet or anything, but general politeness is a nice touch, and the whole ignoring me thing while talking to a co-worker about non-work related things is unacceptable.

I like the self check outs as well. In order of preference:
Food Lion (the bomb checkout even has a conveyer belt)
Harris Teeter
Kroger
Anybody else
then Wal Mart (sh!t never scans and menuing is confusing)

What ticks me off is getting behind someone in self check out that are clueless about how to scan stuff and punch buttons on the kiosk. I watched this guy rubbing a package of cheese across the scanner for at least 3 minutes until he eventually gave up and picked the cheese off the scanner to ask for assistance. Low and behold it scanned. He then tried rubbing a container of milk and guess what it didn't work. I think it took him 10 minutes to acna in 3 items and he was trying to learn how to do produce when I left.

Also, when you have an entire overflowing cart of groceries, please do not use the self checkout lane. This is what the baggers in the regular aisles are there for. I don't have really anything bad to say about retail employees, other than most preschoolers know more about computers than BB employees and the local Staples store think 5-15% off retail value constitutes Clearance.

I worked at a Dillons grocery store (almost identical to a Kroger, owned by them in fact) for two summers and can relate to some of the things mentioned here. For the posters that mentioned food stamps, the food stamp program that was used in my area only allowed its users to buy "good" food, as opposed to junk food, beer, etc. If you tried to scan a non-approved item after indicating that the order was a food stamp order, the scanner would give an error. The thing I didn't like about it was that these type of orders took much longer to finish because for every item you would have to take a marker and cross out the barcode (so the buyer couldn't return the items for cash), note on a special form each item they bought and the price, and then finally have them sign/date it like a check and feed it through the check machine. On busy days these orders would really slow things down. Most of the other things that bothered me have already been mentioned (slow check writers, too many items for express lane). Babies/young children were amusing sometimes. Once I was checking someone out and his son was sitting in the front of the cart. He suddenly grabs a large jar of spaghetti sauce, leans over the side of the cart and drops it.

Yup, I worked as a checker/bag boy at a grocery store for around 2.5 years and to quit because I was beginning to hate people in general.

I worked as a checker for Hugh M Woods my Junior and Senior year in High School. It was a hardware/lumber store in Colorado in other parts of the country they went by Payless Cashways.

Months before i quit and went in the air force i had a very very strong dislike for the general public. Lots of people can be huge assh0les. I watched customers go completly balistic to our managers, i mean yelling, screaming, arms in the air, red faces. You could hear them all over the store. Plus being a checker in a hardware store sucked, god help you if you ring up a 10 cent washer and the customer cusses you out because the sign on the bin said 7 cents.... :| I will never do that again, ill dig ditches before i go into that environment again.

I think that everyone should be forced to work in retail for at least a few months at some point in their lives; I worked my way through college at cigar stores and other retail shops (and waited some tables). As a result, I'm always nice to the people behind the counter and I tip like a madman...they are sh1t jobs and if I can help to keep their day from becoming flaming hellfire I will.

Remember that any job would be great if it weren't for the fvcking customers

You think there's stupid people in the retail side of things??? Really? Try out the IT support side of things. I'd venture a guess that better than 90% of computer users have no idea what they're doing on the damn things.

I'd say the same thing about 80% of the admins.

what does it matter how long they take to write a check or break out the coupons...

your getting paid by the hour, its not like your getting paid per customer...

Function SoapBox(rants, raves, foo)

I have no problem with checks or coupons, however, get your crap together before hand.

Nothing like waiting for 10 mins for the checkout, and then have some stupid idiot woman start looking for her checkbook and digging around in her purse for "Oh I have a coupon somewhere for that".

If you are going to write a check, start filling it out while everyone is waiting. If you are going to use coupons have them already sorted and ready.

If you are going to use express don't have them do price checks and running around for cigarettes.

Only 80% of the admins? I'd say more like 90%. I'm continually amazed at how many of these stupid fvsks can
keep standing with that swollen head on their shoulders.
