Its quite simple - can an ATA100 drive work on an ATA33-only supported motherboard?

I just bought an IBM 60gxp, and guess what - it doesn't work. It was sent in a flimsy FedEx, paper-envelope in an anti-static bag. It definitely is not recognized on my Asus P3B-F, and since this is my first ATA100 HD, I was just making sure I'm not a complete idiot.

I have all three cable types (all of which I've tried)...ATA33, ATA66, and ATA100 cables.

Thanks! sorry for the cross-posting...

which i just found out...anyone have any recommendations on making sure everything works out in me getting this back to the person?

i sent a money order to him...can i cancel it?

i've pm'ed him telling him its dead, and have asked for him to pay shipping for me to return it to him (approx $8)...and i'm going to ship in a nice, very safe hard drive box to make sure that it wasn't my fault at all.

...first time i've ever been screwed on this forum, and it couldn't have happened at a worse time...

nope, you should pay shipping back.

you didnt get screwed, you got a part DOA, big deal. if you dont get restitution (i like that word :)) then you are screwed. give the person a chance to fix it.

are you absolutely sure it's dead? tried it in a different pc? made sure it's set for master/slave. use a different power connector, make sure the bios is on auto detect, etc.

can you hear the drive spin up at all? if not then the puppy is dead. if it spins up it may just be a setting somehwere.

Unfortunately, that's just bad luck (I hope).
If you really want to take issue with the packaging (was there any padding at all?) you could probably leave him negative feedback, but I can't see doing much else unless he's done this before.

The convention is that you pay return shipping, just as if Buy.com had sent you a DOA part. Pretty much nobody in the business will pay your return shipping for you unless it's a HELLA expensive part or you're purchasing as a company.

i've tried all of the above...two systems (P3B-F, and Abit BP6). The drive doesn't make a sound at all. Motherboard on auto-detect. I tried all jumper configurations...

the fedex package had a tiny, very thin bubblewrap lining. there was no extra bubblewrap around the drive at all.

i know what you be talkin' bout. some people dont have common sense :(

too bad you cant send it back in the same evelope. good luck in getting it straightend out. hopefully the drive is still under warranty. just be prepared to pay shipping back to the dude. it sucks, but that's the way it's done 99% of the time :|
