Then how do you dial when you drive. Right now I have to pick the phone up when driving and press the buttons on the phone to dial. I am mainly concerned with getting a ticket for dialing on my phone.

Um... it takes about 5 seconds to dial someone saved as a favorite.

You aren't going to get a ticket for it. At least not around here. It is illegal to txt and drive, proving someone was txting and not doing something else, such as making a phone call is all but impossible. And the likely hood of you getting a ticket for txting and driving is next to zero.

Or maybe it's S-Voice that he was mistaken about.

Because Google Voice does work without data.

Funny. :) *I* brought up an example where Google Voice doesn't work without data, which is what confused him into thinking it was a voice recognition thing. The Android app has a feature that integrates with the native dialer so that your out-going calls use your GV number and the call history is correct. This fails with no data and sometimes fails with data (strange outages; sometimes seemingly specific to the contact I am dialing). When it happens, you have to disable GV for outgoing calls, restore data (sometimes by simply disabling WiFi; like in my examples), or give up.

Don't remain be clueless. Even if they don't ticket you, you can get dinged after the fact.

Law enforcement has known data acquisition tools that can collect that exact information as easily as they can connect to your car's data recorder. Until everyone became aware of it, most non-Apple phones had "Carrier IQ" logging all of that including every moment the screen was active and whether or not a touch input was made. The tools were able to get nearly the same information from Apple phones. The kit was portable and could acquire the info on the roadside.

The more you know.

I'm very familiar with this, and it's been a while (I'd like to say maybe 7-8 months, at least?) since GV only needs data for the first call you made to a particular number. After that first call, subsequent calls to that number will work without data.

I'm guessing though that you're aware of this and GV still fails you at times? This never happened to me and I use GV exclusively.

When AT&T had a data outage I rebooted my phone and I couldn't call any of my contacts without disabling it, so perhaps rebooting the phone or upgrading the app might clear the cache or something. I've had the issue seemingly at random sometimes where I could call some people and not others, so that might be it. Also, the redialing was not always from picking it from the recent calls list where it may transparently still use the GV access number. I often selected a GV text message or voicemail and hit Menu->Call or picked it from my contact list, which may also affect things.

Two things:
You aren't using Google Now or S-Voice if you don't have data.* :colbert:
Google Voice is not what you think it is.

*We know about that. That's plain-jane voice dialer that doesn't do anything special. You shouldn't have to give up S-Voice or Google Now when they are available just to use the normal voice dialing when they aren't. It should be automatic. It isn't. that's the problem. Get it?

what are you talking about google voice works without data to call any contact in your phone
