Stupid forest fires

I was supposed to be leaving later today for a 6 day rafting trip down the Salmon river in Idaho. I just got this message from my cousin, who was planning the trip.

The big fire along the river is still burning. They do not plan to close
the river. However, the gal with whom I spoke called the firecrew and was
told the canyon is quite smoky. The phrase was "socked-in". They said it
is as bad as it was in 2000, and I was on the river at that time. That trip
was pretty sucky, as the smoke filled the canyon so thickly that we didn't
see the sun until the last day or so. It was cold and I would paddle with
my eyes closed as much as possible because the smoke stung my eyes. (ever
stood in smoke from a campfire for a few minutes?) So we have decided to
cancel the trip for this year. Sorry, but I think you'd be pretty
disappointed to drive that far for a sucky trip.

If I ever catch the guy who lit that fire, his ass is grass.

I just thought you'd all want to know.

Beginning of a disaster

Dry conditions similar to those in 1985 and 2000 returned to the Salmon River Canyon this summer.

At 4:48 a.m. on July 20, observers on the Long Tom Lookout reported smoke in the Cramer Creek drainage and suspected a lightning-caused fire


Sad for those two firefighters and their families.

I'd rather blame a person so I have someone to take my anger out on. It's kind of hard to go beat up nature.

My current theory is that my boss flew out there and set all of the fires. He was kind of reluctant to give me a week off so close to our gaming show, so I've had my suspicions. Needless to say, he was very happy when I told him I wouldn't be taking the week off.

Why be anygry and a natural and healthy process? Forest fires are good for forests.

In their current state forest fires are very bad for foests. Forests are so overgrown anymore that if a fire starts there is simply too much fuel to ever get the fire back under control. Back before we started surpressing the fires, they were a very regular occurrance. The normal thing was that a fire would start, it would burn out the underbrush and dead trees ,and that was it. There was never enough fuel in the forest to start a major blaze.

Anymore there are simply too many trees in the forest. They have no natural means of thinning the population now that we no longet allow fires to occur, so that when a fire does start we get the major conflagrations you see on the news. Thos fires are bad. They kill everything ans leave a huge path of destruction that takes a long time to recover from.

I've actually seen places in the Black hills of South Dakota where a huge fire will be burning through public land, destroying everything in its path. It then passed in to a patch of private property that contained properly maintained forest. The fire literally destroyed the forest on either side of the private property, but did no damage to the house and trees when it passed thourgh the pivate land. And it was because it had been properly maintained.
