Stupid DVDs

So I've owned a DVD burner for a year now but have not burned one DVD in that time. So today I finally buy a spindle of 16x DVD-Rs to burn some stuff. I have an 8x burner.

No matter what I try to burn in Nero, it says Burn Process Failed instantly, without even trying to begin. Not only that, but 2.4x is the highest option!

Here is the log from Nero:

First thing you should do is update your burner's firmware, I believe this is the latest:
http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/FIRMWARE/Nec/Nec-ND-2500A-firmware-19.shtml

Secondly, your version of Nero is a bit old now, you're using version 6.3.1.6, the latest available is 6.6.0.16. You can download updates from http://ww2.nero.com/enu/Nero_6_Ultra_Edition_Update_Update.php
Simply type your name and CD-Key when it asks you to, uninstall your old version first.

I've never really used Nero Express, I use Nero. You should try that as there might be a setting you're overlooking. I can't tell much from that log though, I'm sure others would have better experience.

I'll look at it some more to see if I can find anything suspicious..

Just for future reference though, sometimes new versions of firmware and Nero are needed to support various blank media and burning methods, it may be that your version of Nero or drive doesn't recognize how to burn on that particular disc.

The flash utility said Target NEC ND-2500A not found. That's odd, as it appears in Device Manager and My Computer normally, reads CDs and DVDs fine, and burns CDs fine.

I wouldn't rush to upgrade firmware I'd personally upgrade nero to see if that works and if it does so be it.... Firmware can do nasty things when no one expects.

what kind of media are you using, try to use only good blanks if you can !
They're Dynex brand, with is really Ritek, but I use these all the time at work no problem, they don't seem to be flaky discs.

what cable and IDE channel is it on?

I like having 1 HD and 1 DVD burner on thier own cables and IDE channels.

it's not in PIO mode is it?

Whats your PC specs?

Maybe you have a broken drive?

Secondary IDE channel, master, nothing else on the channel. It's in UDMA Mode 2. Specs in sig.

I doubt the drive is broken. It reads everything fine and burns CDs fine. This is the first I've tried to burn a DVD since I've owned it.

It very well may be that the media is too new and I need to get the latest firmware. But it says Target NEC ND-2500A is not found correctly.

Ritek isn't the greatest although it still shouldn't be giving you those kinds of errors. I'd update the firmware.

If you don't find your answer here, try a forum dedicated to this kind of hardware like cdfreaks.com.

Already posted there. 🙂

I'm sure the problem is the firmware, since these discs are over a year newer than the drive itself, but my problem is updating it. It says the drive is not detected and the flash util closes itself.

From here, it says that error can occur when the firmware does not meet the update requirements. Well...what the hell does that mean. 😕

I have the same problem with my NEC ND-1100A. :/

I take it the drive is beyond the point where you can RMA it at this point?

Given that at this point we know the discs work in other burners, your burning software is up to date, your drive firmware is up to date, and your drive can burn CD's, my guess would be that the drive itself has a hardware/manufacturing defect that prevents DVD's from burning successfully, and its time to return it/get a different one.

...some other things to try, if you haven't already, may be to toggle your "Buffer Underrun Protection" in the burning software and see if that does anything, and select other burning options (multisession, disc at once, track at once, burn etc.), and try burning at the slowest possible speed. MAybe also try burning a DVD from a different brand, just in case the drive is just tempermental and doesn't like your current brand.

I *have* been reading over at cdfreaks that the 2500A doesn't support Dynex discs, however they thought the firmware upgrade might help - it didn't. Perhaps another brand will work then, I'm not sure.

I'm very skeptical to believe it can't burn DVDs. The drive is only a year old and is hardly ever used, as in, it reads and burns a couple discs a month. And I've never burned one DVD yet.
