I need to get new laptop and have a choice (using a Dell credit through my job) to get a Vostro with AMD AthlonTM 64 X2 Dual-Core processor TK-57

or

Intel® Core? 2 Duo T5270 (1.4GHz/800Mhz FSB/2MB cache)
Processor

All other specs are equal, and the price is right (for my boss anyway).
It will be used heavily for school and work, though I do intend to use it fairly often for the usual multimedia stuff as well. Gaming's not important.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated - thanks in advance:)

I'd say its pretty much a wash given those two choices. The Core 2 Duo is faster on a per clock basis but the AMD chip has 500 more Mhz - which it probably needs to stay even.

Yeah, the 2mb cache does seem to hamstring the C2D quite a bit.

I don't think your question is stupid at all. Too many blanket statements are made regarding C2D vs. AMD X2.

intel generally has better power management/aka longer battery life. all other things being equal I'd get the c2d cpu.

i have the t5250 in my laptop, its plenty fast for regular usage and has low power consumption (undervolted to 0.95v).
