Wrong. This is an issue that shouldn't be easily overlooked.

Here's the bottom line. I don't care if your company has 10 employees or 10,000, important data should never be saved on a machine. That being said, if a laptop breaks then so what, shit happens, its just a machine. The real loss would be the data.

Enable offline files and folders on the laptop and give him no other choice but to have only the laptop.

You'll be doing the right thing to nip this in the bud ahead of time. There's no way in hell one person should have both a desktop and a laptop. Its double the cost (actually more then double because of the difference in price, double the potential for shit to go wrong and not be where its supposed to be, and double the support needed for just one person.

I dont see what the big deal is...i managed to get a laptop with a docking station as my main work pc, a main desktop for more graphic intensive stuff, and a test desktop. As long as his department has the budget for it and its approved by his supervisor, he should be able to get what he wants.

you need to upgrade your laptop then, mine handles everything i toss at it. i do, however, have 2 test machines on my table as well as a myriad of PLCs sitting around. i have to be able to test up to 4 nodes on any of my customers systems at times, so it comes in handy. but thats not the norm, testing equipment isnt really your daily user. laptops now can be purchased with the power of a desktop, theres no reason to use that as a reason to keep a desktop.

That's shortsighted, there's a ton of reasons for people to have multiple machines, especially if they actually need a laptop for field work as well. It does not add that much extra support, and if it's that much of a hassle for you then quite frankly you must not be that good at your job (of course I'm of the mind that the IT people exist to help/work with their users). If anything it might add some redundancy so that there might be less downtime in the event of one of the machines needing work. Granted it all comes down to how important it is to keep that person working. Cost wise it should not be difficult to get them both a lower end laptop and a lower end desktop for the same price as a better laptop.

I do agree that whatever you decide you should make it standard policy.

My desktop can barely keep up...not sure what it is. ArcGis runs slow as crap with all the ortho and point data.

i know exactly how this is. dealing with it in my position after this new company took over. people pretty much got their own way most of the time but now they have to go through approvals and they have to have justifications and stuff and they totally do not like it. they still want to be "special".

I love the fact that everyone NEEDS a laptop nowadays even admin secretaries , yep justify a laptop for the 1-2 times a year you leave the office, they are rarely taken out of the docking station (i know this because they have forgotten the locking cable combo..)

Correct, this is what Citrix is for.
