Maetryx here,
Sweet mother of God! Yesterday I installed a APC 1100VA battery backup, hooked up the serial cable and installed the Powerchute plus 5.0.2 software for my work computer. Today I decided to uplug the battery backup from the wall and see if it was working and would support my computer.
It worked fine. The software even popped up a Messenger message (addressed to the domain) and said the power was out. I plugged it back in. Another message popped up saying power was restored.
And then I got a phone call from Computer Services. That Messenger message popped up on hundreds of computers. Everyone in our domain got that message on their screen.
How the hell was I supposed to know that? I installed with all defaults and followed the instructions that came with the unit.
So Computer Services tells me to take off the serial cable to the unit and uninstall Powerchute, and acted like I should have known better. Someone in the background was threatining to break my fingers. I guess they got a lot of phone calls all at once. Actually it's kind of funny.
