Stupid APC battery backup software....

Maetryx here, 😎

Sweet mother of God! Yesterday I installed a APC 1100VA battery backup, hooked up the serial cable and installed the Powerchute plus 5.0.2 software for my work computer. Today I decided to uplug the battery backup from the wall and see if it was working and would support my computer.

It worked fine. The software even popped up a Messenger message (addressed to the domain) and said the power was out. I plugged it back in. Another message popped up saying power was restored.

And then I got a phone call from Computer Services. That Messenger message popped up on hundreds of computers. Everyone in our domain got that message on their screen. 😱 How the hell was I supposed to know that? I installed with all defaults and followed the instructions that came with the unit.

So Computer Services tells me to take off the serial cable to the unit and uninstall Powerchute, and acted like I should have known better. Someone in the background was threatining to break my fingers. I guess they got a lot of phone calls all at once. Actually it's kind of funny. 🙂

LMAO!

I did the same thing at the University I used to work. ~10000 people got that pop-up. LOL!
Needless to say I had to unplug my phone for the rest of my day.

Looks like someone forgot to RTFM.

A bit trusting to accept the defaults for any install these days, since you could be letting them install anything from spyware & adware to a distributed computing client to let them leech your CPU cycles 🙂

I was thinking about getting an 1100 to plug 2 home computers into. How are they?

I think it's awesome. It will support my machine for over 30 minutes during a power outage (according to the propaganda on the box). I got it for $139 at Sams Club.

Our Samsclub has it for < 120...

Doh!, forgot, you live in Santa Clauses backyard. Local power company is killing my pc's with their spikes, so I got to go with a UPS, power strips aren't cutting it.
