Up here in the northland, we have some pretty bad winters and most farmers need a 4 wheels drive pickup. They also have to drive much farther for their parts, supplies, etc. and many of them can't afford more then one decent vehicle, so they get a good gas guzzling pickup because they can't get by without it.

You'd be surprised.. My F-350 gets 22mpg and it masses over 7500lbs. So not only am I safe (no way I'm driving a tin can death box), comfortable, utilitarian, I get similar mileage as my wifes Buick (Regal GS) and better mileage than my towncar.

Diesel folks.. You get economy car mileage without the pos economy car that goes with it.

Stunt you act like that 10% yeild is a guarntee. Ever heard of "Past performance does not guarantee future results..." You could lose everything or it could triple every year.

i'm not really sure but i think SUVs are one of the most unsafe vehicles. i think the reason is that roll-overs are the most deadly accident you can be involved in and SUVs are much more likely to roll over.

Wrong!

A head on between an 10000lbs. vechile and a 2000lbs vechile both moving at 50 mph assuming equal bumper height... (It's get worse for the car if the truck has high bumpers).. After impact the 10000lbs vechile is still moving forward at 39.8 mph while the 2000 lbs vechile is -39.8 mph. This means the 10000lb truck hit a virtual brick wall at around 10 mph while the car hit it at 90 mph. Which would you rather be in?

Had to use an perfectly inelastic collision because all variables arnt known. Z= sqrt2/3 y^2 Where Z in final speed and Y is initial. But you get the idea.

SUV's are unjustified unless you are loaded :)

That being said, we've always owned SUV's...

I currently use a GMC Suburban. (over $100 to fill)

 On admitting to being loaded.

Even if I was loaded I don't see myself wasting fuel and money like that on something like a Surburban.

Just goes against my grain that we as human race should be progressing and not regressing.

hitch + $200 trailor. Solved

i've hauled 5 people around in my 2 door cavalier fine. Of course none of us are large people, so it might be different with a bunch of fatties.

my grandma used to keep an old pickup that my family basically shared to haul junk around when it was needed. Never was used for anything else though because everyone hated it.

no for the poeple in the suv and no for the people outside the suv. if you want a reasonablysafe car, go with an early 90's bonneville or something.

From my experience, the people who own SUV's aren't the ones complaining about gas prices.

if you go out as a family there is a ton of stuff you need to take with you

if you go to costco to shop for a family of 4 you need a lot of room to haul the food

But Zebo don't you WANT your "tin can of death" to be crushed? That way it takes away a lot of the force that would otherwise hit you.... I don't understand why people think its dangerous when small cars get crushed into boxes in accidents...its supposed to! Let the impact occur for the longest amount of period while keeping you safe in a "cage" in the car...

yeah, in BC we had a 32ft boat....that's why we bought it.
Now we only have a couple seadoos...so it's kinda excessive.

I had a Civic. :(

me too till my ex decided it looked better upside down.

:Q

she rolled it cause she was voice recording her notes on her way home from school. yes there is a reason she is now referred to as "The Ex."

man that sucks....sorry

Oh she was fine. One bruise on her hip, and my car disintegrated. I was glad she was OK but GD how freaking stupid can you be? Oh and she rolled it doing around 75MPH, so if you think you're not safe in a little car, think again.

I once went to 80mph on my 87' I once I hit that I slowed way the fvck down... I was surprised my car didn't completely fall apart...

Im made it to about 102-105 in my 86 celica.

The Civic would easily do 90MPH on the highway if you pushed it. She was just driving through the Texas Panhandle canyonlands and missed a curve.

That being said, my old Saab just hummed along at over 140MPH. God I miss that car. But I'm a hippy now so I rarely drive.

That is just a myth. SUVs are more dangerous. To summarize, they are not designed to the same safety standards as cars, don't incorporate good crumple zones, and more likely to roll over, and more likey to result in injury in the event of a rollover. These are all theoretically fixable, but have not been fixed.

Sources:

http://www.cnn.com/2003/TRAVEL/10/15/vehicle.weight.ap/
(cliffs: "The study found that the fatality rate for SUVs and passenger cars of similar weight was essentially the same in non-rollover crashes. But death rates rose significantly for SUV occupants in rollover crashes.")

Cliffs: SUVs are the most dangerous vehicles for transporting children.

Ugh, I hated the fact that we had to buy an suv (even though it was a small jeep liberty). We would've never even considered one, until of course, we bought an English Mastiff. 200 pounds later, I'm glad we got it.
