Stunt pilot loses wing in flight

Fake...and:

Woah that was pretty cool.

It's true, that landing does look fake though. It's way too smooth and no bouncing or anything. Even if it did not pancake, it would at least bounce around a lot, but most likely it would be total wreck.

The propeller stopping instantly added to the lol. I doubt propellers can be stopped that fast considering the speed they're turning at.

I remember reading an article about an Israeli AF pilot that managed to land his F-16 with only one wing after a mid-air accident.

I forgot about that one. I didn't remember it until towards the end that I'd seen it before. That CGI looks bad. It's about on par of that history channel show that recreates air battles.

For once I have to agree with TB. That landing would have pancaked the plane.

I used to fly RC planes a lot and at first the movements and the landing looked exactly like how a RC plane does. It's when the "pilot" got out that threw me.

No real plane would have that much engine power to fly/land like that. But an RC one, sure.

That's because they edited in a real airplane at the end of the video. Notice how conveniently the fuselage and camera angle is hiding the fact that the real airplane the guy gets out of actually has a right wing?

One of my former employers in the aviation business forwarded that to me and thought it was real. I sent him the snopes link, he was pretty embarrassed about it.

It's CGI. Good job but it's still fake. You can tell because the camera blurs for no apparent reason just as it touches down. The blur is too perfect for loss of focus. Final Cut trick.

I remember I had a stabilizer break off one of my RC planes. The thing lawn darted. Loosing a wing would throw the balance of the plane way off and make it it impossible to control.

If somebody "lost a wing" and still landed I'd have to guess they only lost part of it and the tale was enlarged in the telling. Or they landed on water, or something.

i believe this has happened to at least one US pilot, too. i remember reading about it and seeing pictures.

i think it just has to do with those planes having so much thrust that the missing lift from the absent wing just doesn't matter that much- i'm sure it still took incredible skill and balls of steel to keep the plane flying, though. but the type of plane in the OP just wouldn't be able to cope with that.

edit: nm, i think i saw the israeli thing-

That is correct. The manufacturer even sent out engineers to check out the plane, because even they said it was impossible. However, it proved one simple thing about aeronautics. With enough thrust, even a brick can fly.
