Contrasting coffins tell the deadly tale of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with black-draped caskets representing slain Palestinians and white ones representing dead Israelis at a peace memorial in Tel Aviv, Israel.

At the center, peace activists attend to the latest symbolic coffin yesterday. President Bush's special envoy, retired Gen. Anthony Zinni, arrives in the region today as the administration tries on several fronts to arrange a cease-fire.

I saw this on rauters page on avantgo on myipaq, this is without doubt the strongest symbol of need for peace.

<< I take it Palastinians are being killedat a two to one rate to that of the Israelis? >>

No, its around four to one.

I heard somewhere that Israel is trying to get the ratio of Palestinian/Israeli kills to 10:1 or more. Pretty sad state of affairs really, I hardly see how that would be more of a deterent to the Palestinians.

<< Anyone know when the Palestinians will get rid of Arafat? >>

not exactly relevant, its just that Sharon is loosing the power of the government slowly, few days ago 2 members in his government resigned because they thought that Sharon was not doing enough violence and now the defense minister has threatened to resign because he thinks sharon is doing too much. The Defense minister was going to pull back all forces in the refugee camps but sharon found out. Also in polls taken by a Israeli newspaper said that only about 27% israelis support Sharon. So things are not going well for him and I was just wondering for long he would have to hold out.

The State of Israel has a parliamental democracy, unlike the USA which has a presidential democracy. That means the votes are for a party of parliament (Kneset), not the president. The Israeli president has about the same amount of power as the British queen. The head of state is the prime minister, leader of the winning party - currently Ariel Sharon. The minister of defence btw is the head of the opposition.
The "elections" are scheduled in three years time.
See the CIA factbook about Israel.
Czar, you mostly have no idea what you're talking about, why won't you keep quiet and let us sort this out, one way or another?

wolf550e,
why wont you just shutup, what I meant is what you described, we have that system here in iceland, just I was a bit lost for words because I'm doing something else right now.

<< Anyone know when the Palestinians will get rid of Arafat? >>

not exactly relevant,

Yasser Arafat: ''We will march toward Jerusalem, millions will be martyred''

relevant to my question since his question was obviosly made to make mine sound :Qextreme:Q, if I'm wrong then I'm sorry but back to my quesion, does anyone know?

Dumbest.........Conflict.............Ever

All this stupid retribution bullsh!t. I just can't believe the US is supporting either side. We should be smacking them both in the back of the head.

Czar, as a person who has a bit of a first hand experience, I think I am allowed to comment. At least I'm not pretending to be unbiased.
Anyway, about your question: Not anytime soon. Sharon still has enough support to hold a government. You do not fully understand the politics here, same as I don't fully understand the politics on the Palestinian side, but that's why I keep quiet about this whole thing, even when there was an incident two blocks from my school and I'll be in uniform by the end of the year. I personally believe Arafat is not the best man for the job to bring some kind of agreement because he managed to make all the mistakes possible during the last 7 years of the peace process. But he is their "chosen" leader, and Sharon promised not to try and replace him, for a while at least.

wolf550e,
I know Sharon still has big support within the government, think it was something around 70-80 out of 120.. lack of words again.. congressmembers or whatever. But for the last few weaks I'v been reading alot about congress members wanting a peaceful solution and not more militery activity. This morning I read an interview with the Israeli ambasador here in Iceland and she is one of those growing numbers in Israel that belive that militery actions will not solve anything.

For garanted peace I think this reprisents much what needs to be done, though I think there is a small chance of peace with arafat in place but absolutely none with sharon in control.

Whats even more sad is that picture didn't move me because I believe that no matter what happens, the Palestinians and Arab coutries will never stop attacking until there is no Israelie state and if Israel gives into Palestinian demands now it will prove that terrorism gets people what they want.

Pretty much my thoughts as well.
