Stumped on a computer issue...

okay, let me know what you all think about this... my box locked up...no mouse, no keys...nothin. turned off the power. turned it back on...blank screen. monitor led just keeps blinking like when the pc is off. so i think maybe my video card took a crap... swapped with another card. nothing. swapped monitors. nothing. disconnected all the hard drives. nothing. connected a different hd as master. nothing. cleared cmos. nothing. swapped existing ram to another slot. nothing. different ram. nothing. i'm getting zero beeps when i turn the power on. suggestions?? mobo fried? it's:

abit is7-e
crucial 512megs pc3200
p4 2.4c
radeon 9500pro
antec 350watt psu

it's overclocked only *slightly* to 2.8...maybe 2.7. can't remember. it's been running fine for months with no temp problems, so i don't think it has anything to do with that. so what do you guys think?? any help is appreciated.

you mean take the ram out and try to boot? i dunno...lemme try that and see.

took the ram out and booted... no beeps. this is what happens:

computer off, monitor connected...the monitor led blinks (on this monitor anyway)

turn on the power...fans, drives spin up. HD light stays lit for around 30 sec.

monitor led keeps blinking. and no beeps from the sys speaker.

HD light goes off...

the same thing happens after everything i've tried

well, make sure all the jumpers are set correctly. otherwise, you may have a bad motherboard. i've had something similar happen to be one time. i had everything set, but when i powered on the comp, nothing happened. i tested everything else out, and hten found out that my motherboard was dead, whcih totally sucked.

yeah, that really sucks... was just surfing some forums and it just locked up. i've never had a motherboard just crap out like that. it's less than 3 months old. any way to tell short of installing a different mobo?

he means look at the capacitors on the motherboard for signs of bulging or leaking. some bad capacitors that fail in ways that you can see by looking at them have been used in some motherboards lately.

certainly sounds like the mobo or cpu is fried... could it have been caused by overheating, maybe??

Yeah, I'd say motherboard most likely, because it *should* beep at you no matter what. Can you test your processor in another PC?

No this is incorrect. A dead CPU will not cause a beep.

How did you clear the CMOS?

You could try unplugging the PS and taking the battery out for a while.

thanks for all the replies. yeah, i can test the processor in another pc...but that will be a major pain in the ass. i wanted to try everything else before i did that. lol... i'll test it out tonight.

i cleared the cmos with the jumper on the mobo.

If memory serves, I had the same symptoms a couple of years back on an old MSI K7T Turbo I think it was called. There I was, playing a game of Worms Armageddon, and Windows took a BSOD dump. Hit the reset button and nothing. Powered off and back on, nothing. Turns out the mobo just up and died. Good luck!

you say fans spin up, but nothign else. Cheapest solution is power supply, that is of course if thats the issue, it COULD be the board, but before ripping everything part, grab another power supply and plug that in, it might be the voltages are shot and the board isnt getting what it needs, and, as ive seen a few times before, fans will spin, drives will function, but the board wont beep, and it will never kick up a video signal, try it, you got a 9 out of 10 shot at it, good luck.

I'm currently dealing with the same issue on an Asus P4C800 Deluxe with a P4 2.8c and Enermax Whisper 465Watt PWRSUP. I'm supposed to hear back from tech support sometime. I will post if we find what the problem is since it might help you out.

well, i swapped the power supply and it did the same thing. turns out it was the cpu. i just got it a little over a month ago from newegg, so i'm rma'ing it. thanks for all the replies. this forum rocks.

yeah the power supply thing helps narrow it down, once you do that, then you know it has to be board/cpu. Video is easy to swap out and try a known working one... but board and cpu arent, even working at a repair facility we dont always have a spare board or even a spare cpu jsut laying around to try, theres too many different kinds to jsut have test ones laying around, so for a home user its even tougher, congrats though, hope ya get it up and running agian soon

yeah, i hear that... i was lucky enough to have another box with a P4 in it. so it wasn't too bad to swap it out. still a pain in the ass though.
