So, we're watching Sponge Bob and suddenly he asks me: "Why do cartoon characters always wear same clothing?" To my surprise, I never even thought about it.
So, does anybody know why, or there is no reason, just a coincidence?

Marketing and recognition. If the clothing stays the same, it's much easier for children to recognize the images (IE: Cartoon chars) than if their clothing changed every episode. So, if you're in the store and they see Sponge Bob, they will instantly recognize him.

Cartoonists are lazy, plus, many people would not recognize characters with different clothes. The clothes, in a sense, are a part of the character. Would donald duck wearing fubu be the same character?

This is an eight year old. Need to speak to them in child-language.
"They were very naughty and made their mommies leave them. They dont' have anyone to do their laundry for them now."
