Stuff to do around Las Vegas other than gambling?

Is, if I were to spend a 3-4 day weekend in LV next month, what should I do? Are there State Parks nearby? Camping? Anything other than the strip really?

I mean, to hear some people tell it, it's basically somewhere between Afghanistan and Breaking Bad once you leave the tourist areas. But I kinda have a hard time believing that.

eat everything
shoot guns
helicopter rides
strip clubs
cause a ruckus

how much money you got?

I just walked around the casinos, went to south rim/ drive by Hoover Dam (was just after 9/11 so no getting off at Hoover Dam)

And saw some shows.

Red Rock Canyon area
Pinball Museum!

Outside of Las Vegas it is a desert without any of the cool cactus.

Do a day or so in the city (2 great restaurants, a show, and if you really want to some gambling) then leave.

The southern Utah national parks are only a few hours away in the northeast direction. Zion National Park is like the grand canyon, except you drive in the bottom and hike your way up. Some really spectacular hikes there. I can give hiking recommendations if you are into it. Plus, if you want to do canyoneering, some companies guide you through some great adventures in narrow slot canyons (no real skills needed, even my older overweight in-laws could do it, they just put you on easier paths through the challenges, or if you are fit they can really make you work hard). Even just hiking the narrows is worth it and very little effort.

Then if you keep going there are many other national parks in Utah. Bryce National Park is the next closest to Vegas:

If you head east instead, you get to the grand canyon. Personally, I think it is not worth it unless you go into it. The Indian reservation is far closer to Vegas than the other entrances and you can helicopter down into the canyon for a daytrip from Vegas.

In between the Utah national parks and the grand canyon (but a bit longer drive) are some fantastic spots near Page, Arizona. The wave is great if you can get there (you have to basically win the lottery since only a few people are let in each day).

Or if you don't want to drive so far, there are some good slot canyons nearby to Vegas. Here is one, but I haven't been there yet.

There is an awesome BMX track in Vegas at Ed Fountain Park.

Everyone who isn't a great big droopy pussy will always go ride there when in town. 🙂
