Stuff to buy in Shanghai?

My grandson is going to Shanghai tomorrow for a month.
Is there anything he should be on the lookout for there that is not available or way more expensive here?
BTW - We have no friends/relatives there, so it's not like he could just ask someone.

PS - Legal stuff only!!

Lots of people in Shanghai can speak English very well.
He sure can ask someone. 🙂

I think he may buy some silk clothings there.

cloooothes!! and silk of course. the fashion there is really cool, and the clothes are really cheap there, even the best name brand ones. its awesome to bargain too.

no relatives? are u chinese, if not then it's gonna be a little difficult to find the good stuff for cheap. The people there will definately try to take advantage of you. So be cautious and keep all your valuables secured.
I'm going back to shanghai next week for 3 weeks, I'm planning on getting lots and lots of cheap media like movies and music.

a wife.

i went back a few years ago and couldn't enjoy it because of a dislocated knee.

like someone else said, be very careful, if you're asian, don't tell then where you're from.

No, we're Irish, which is why we have no friends/relatives in China! 🙂

I wasn't really looking for any 'insider' deals. just things in China that would be much more expensive here.
It's a HS trip and they will be staying in college dorms, so I figure it should be pretty safe.
I'll tell him to keep his eyes open for movies and music, as long as it's legal.

Thanks to everyone else too, I think!

Does the same apply to Hong Kong, I plan on going there for the month of August. Plus I'm about as white as white can get, is this a bad thing?

Unless you are from there, they'll know you're a foreigner the moment you open your mouth

They'll know by the way you're dressed as well.
Everything can be negotiated. From hookers to vendors out on the street. Never pay what's listed or what the hooker tells you.
Negotiation is the key

🙂

Don't just pay for something without haggling seller.
usually, you only want to pay 10~30% of what they asked for.

$1 DVDs

that's true..
but I wouldn't bring it onboard the plane tho.

I'd ship it instead.

I think the only way is to bring it onboard the plane, there is some law there prohibiting u from shipping it out of the country.

haven't been there myself, but I think it would be a lot better since hong kong was under british rule for so long, I guess they are all used to foreigners. But still be on the cautious side though.

the movies and music will be legal as long as u don't buy them on the street, also make sure the dvds are region free.
