Ps. It just recalled that Xandros is formerly Corel Linux. And you can Down load source code & install it on your system if you like, but personally I wouldn't install a bastardize version of Debian distro on my computer when the true Debian is still around.

What really anoying is that Xandros don't have their own documentation and point their users to Debain man page for installing a new kernel.

How do I build a new kernel?

See the Debian documentation for building kernels or the Linux Kernel HOWTO. If you installed the package xandros-kernel-source-2.4 it will be installed at /usr/src/xandros-kernel-source-2.4.19.tar.bz2. The configuration options used to build the kernel are in /boot/config-2.4.19-x1.

Mmm.... I wouldn't say bastardized.

I mean... remember Mandrake "back in the day". By definition, you could say that it used to be a bastardized Red Hat.

Hmmm, that is a good point I have never thought of. Those Unix admins do get paid a lot more than most NT admins.

ahh yes, linux, the wonderful operating system where you have to recompile your kernel to get stuff like sound.

Ah, yes, but if you have any kind of standard or semi-standard sound card, any reasonably-built Linux distribution will detect it automatically. If you built your computer intending to use Linux from the start, and picked some weirdo sound card, then it's entirely your fault (not saying this is necessarily true; perhaps you got a proprietary Comcrap a long time ago and just now tried Linux - in that case you're not to blame).

And why does everybody have to think that recompiling a kernel is so hard? All it requires is a basic knowledge of a command prompt, and knowledge of what's inside your computer; with that, you can easily compile a kernel.

You do? Hmmm.... I wonder why my sound-card worked right away out of the box with no recompiling whats-o-ever when I used SuSE for example?

Seriously. Never had to recompile for sound. Using Mandrake 9.0 on Boistar board w/ on board 5.1 and it was picked up automatically. Using Monster MX400 in another PC and it was picked up automatically. Have an older ESS1868 that required that I install ISAPNPTOOLS and SNDCONFIG, but that found the card no problem, configured it and I had sound and my laptop has a Crystal sound chip on it that ISAPNPTOOLS and SNDCONFIG found with no problem. And as far as ISAPNPTOOLS and SNDCONFIG goes, are installing either or both of these programs any worse than installing Soundblaster Live drivers on a Windows machine? I think not. 😉

Creative Labs drivers suck ass. My SBLive uses the built-in Windows 2000 drivers, since I hate all the extra crap that Creative feels they need to put on your system if you install their drivers. :|
