this is a troll thread to begin with, but moreso since the real details of the study can't be accessed.

was this even published in a peer-review journal? I can't find any significant information about the author online other than links regarding this article which really screams "theory in search of evidence" to me.

stacking the bottom rung of American students, where politics lean more conservative than other western countries, versus the top rung of international students seems like stacking the deck to support the author's preconceived notions if nothing else.

As someone who knows a thing or two about social science type experimental design, I have to regard such a experiment to very difficult to design and I very much doubt the findings will stand up to scrutiny. Much less be replicated over a variety of different backgrounds.

And as it is, I regard my self as a liberal, I might want to believe those results, but with just one study, skepticism and doubt is the wisest course. The other thing to note is that studies like that grab headlines, and if headlines by science writers were true, cancer would have been cured 50 years ago and automobiles would run on water.

The conclusion of the study is meaningless with regard to the merits of conservative and liberal ideologies. That an unintelligent person adheres to an idea does not detract from the idea. This is nothing more than one big ad hominem attack.

You're flat-out wrong. For one thing, you've mis-stated what the study found. It did NOT find that, "AN unintelligent person adheres to an idea." Rather, to use phrasing similar to yours, the study found:

"The the lower the IQ, the more conservative."

That's not an ad hominem attack. That's saying that people with weaker mental abilities tend to embrace conservative principles more strongly. And unless you think that - taken as a group - people with low IQs make decisions as wisely as those with higher IQs, it's valid to conclude that conservatism is the ideology of the stupid.

Do you really not understand what "correlation" means?

Saying that LDL cholesterol has a high correlation with heart disease doesn't mean that all people with high LDL cholesterol have or will get heart disease. It means the chances of having or getting heart disease increase with LDL cholesterol levels. There are undoubtedly many individuals who have lived to 100 with no sign of heart disease, yet they have high LDL cholesterol. That doesn't mean the science is wrong. It means only that correlation is a statistical concept.

Similarly, the fact that a lower-IQ has a high correlation with a conservative ideology doesn't mean that ALL conservatives have low IQs or that there aren't liberals with low IQs. It means only that you're more likely to have a lower IQ to the extent that you're conservative, or that you're more likely to have a higher IQ to the extent that you're liberal.

Maybe this is one example of why conservatives ARE in fact so stupid: They don't understand basic mathematical/scientific principles. And then they argue from their stance of ignorance.

You're really showing your low IQ . . . er . . . conservatism . . . here.

Let's assume that 1254 community college students and 1600 foreign students seeking entry to the U.S. as a group have IQs 10 points below the norm for people in higher education. That would place their AVERAGE group IQ at about 105 (people who attend college are on average about 1 standard deviation (about 16 IQ points) above the mean IQ).

So we start with a group with an average IQ of 105. Then we do two things:

1) We measure their IQs.
2) We give them a questionaire and determine their political beliefs, and we give the subjects a score of (say) 0 to 100 on the liberal-to-conservative scale (with 50 being middle of the road, 0 being radical-left, and 100 being reactionary-right).

Ideally, the researchers performing (1) are isolated from those performing (2) so as to minimize bias.

Then we plot the two numbers on a two-axis diagram. And we see a trend: Those with the lowest IQs tend to also get the highest "conservative" scores. Those with the highest IQs tend to also get the lowest "conservative" scores.

This approach can be used with ANY subgroup. We could take students at Cal Tech (average IQ 130). Students at Yale Law (125). Students at UCLA(120). It doesn't matter what the GROUP AVERAGE is. What matters is how the data correlates when the group is "spread" by their IQ/political measurements.

Yes, people with high IQs make stupid decisions just like people with low IQs. But those with high IQs taken as a group make FEWER stupid decisions than those with low IQs taken as a group. Or to put this another way: On average, a highly intelligent person will make fewer bad decisions than a very stupid person.
