study says being homophobic maybe a sign that you are gay

WHY are political and religious figures who campaign against gay rights so often implicated in sexual encounters with same-sex partners?

In recent years, Ted Haggard, an evangelical leader who preached that homosexuality was a sin, resigned after a scandal involving a former male prostitute; Larry Craig, a United States senator who opposed including sexual orientation in hate-crime legislation, was arrested on suspicion of lewd conduct in a men’s bathroom; and Glenn Murphy Jr., a leader of the Young Republican National Convention and an opponent of same-sex marriage, pleaded guilty to a lesser charge after being accused of sexually assaulting another man.

One theory is that homosexual urges, when repressed out of shame or fear, can be expressed as homophobia. Freud famously called this process a “reaction formation” — the angry battle against the outward symbol of feelings that are inwardly being stifled. Even Mr. Haggard seemed to endorse this idea when, apologizing after his scandal for his anti-gay rhetoric, he said, “I think I was partially so vehement because of my own war.”

It’s a compelling theory — and now there is scientific reason to believe it. In this month’s issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, we and our fellow researchers provide empirical evidence that homophobia can result, at least in part, from the suppression of same-sex desire.

so like if you are grossed out by the thought of your parents "doing it" you are into incest?

same with bestiality?

Some people seem obsessed about gay men though.

I'm straight and I don't really care what they do, it's not something that interests me.
Let them do what they want it's none of my business.

I love hanging out with gay men, they compliment me WAY more than the average woman either with words or staring.

That doesn't make any sense. Also merely being grossed out by homosex isn't a qualifier to the study's findings. You also have to be an ashole about it, i.e. preaching obsessively against it to as many people as you can. I'm grossed out by homosex too, but that's just a purely unconscious, uncontrollable reaction; I support gay rights, including the right to marry, and I tend to take their side against bigots on these topics. (In other words, what's right is right, doesn't matter how you feel about it.)

no, its just the implied logic behind these types of "attacks", I just don't find it valid, there are perfectly good ways to make a good argument without going down this road.

if an atheist condemns religion publicly he must be religious right? if you are against the war in iraq and protest it as many did then you must be for the war right? peta spends its time haranguing people with fur coats because they hate animals right? the logic is faulty by default, and that should be the end of it. you don't make yourself any stronger by attaching yourself to this type of thought.

Just like politicians that campaign against porn and homosexuality, prudes that are closeted sex maniacs. I think being closeted makes any person curious and hostility is the tool they use to convince themselves that its wrong.

Just look at the Catholic Church Hierarchy. Without self hating closeted gay men the church would implode for lack of priests.

The correct heterosexual response to the existence of gays is "Meh. More pussy for me".

If you're hetero, you don't really have a horse in that race. I'm not going to go championing the gay cause anytime soon, but I also don't give a shit what they do with each other. I don't even really mind public displays of gayness, like some people seem to. Just don't get in my way while doing it. I feel that's the proper attitude to have toward something that has absolutely nothing to do with me.

I don't even really mind public displays of gayness, so long as it doesn't get in my way on the way to wherever I'm going. I feel that's the proper attitude to have toward something that has absolutely nothing to do with me.

exactly.

I don't care if they get married. why should straight men be the only ones stuck in it? it has nothing to do with me. NOTHING they do really has a impact on my life so i don't care what they do.

So those that are gay really arent gay?

No. Gay people who are out and at peace with themselves are normal people. Closeted gays who are at war with themselves are pathological assholes who hate normal gays, preach their hypocritical beliefs really loudly, marry women they don't love, have sex in public bathrooms, enter the Catholic priesthood and slut shame women for not hating their bodies, and other fucked up shit.

I'm averse to having another mans penis anywhere near my body.

Wo, I'm gay. Shit.

Do you go round making speeches and ranting about how terrible it would be to have another man's penis near your body, how violated you'd feel if it touched you, then get glassy eyed and breathless?

Nope they're saying that if you are always railing against your parents for doing it and looking at some random person and saying to a friend "I bet he likes to screw dogs." And take every opportunity to do so then you might have a problem...

"He doth protest too much..." so to speak.

It's natural to for straight people to be grossed out a bit by the thought of gay sex but when you get some "straight" person always making a point to bash gay people then you go "hhmmmmm why are you so preoccupied?"
