Study rips college minority programs

Jesus, when will people learn that the only way to combat racism is to MIX together. The only way to understand soemone else, or another culture, is to be familiar with it. Seeing it at a stronghold off in the distance where you're not allowed will only engender mistrust and contempt.

Common sense is a rare thing these days.

True, but to say that pairing up a minority freshman with an upper-class minority is to "provid[ing] remedial services specifically geared toward minorities, stigmatizing minority populations" is twisting just a *tad* bit.

Haha, my roommate & I are SO vindicated.

😀

We piss off BOTH of our girlfriends with our views on this subject (we both agree with the report).

Not at all. They're not saying the intent is to stigmatize minority populations, they're saying that is the unintended consequence of these policies, and I don't find much disputable about that.

Ask any black in college whether they have encountered the stigma that they got in based on their race. But more to the point, that stigma is true most of the time.

As usual Tscenter, you don't read or think. I AGREE that a stigmatization exists, but NOT because of programs like minority mentoring. I went to a school very much like the schools surveyed, was active in student politics, and am myself a minority - there were NEVER any complaints that minority mentoring equated to a de-facto remedial program or was itself responsible for stigmatization.

No sh1t, but this has NOTHING to do with minority mentoring. The problem for such stigmatization is the affirmative action policy.

I just want to share a few personal observations.

My freshman year of college, there was an African Ameriacn themed floor. No one on that floor hung out with anyone I knew, and I rarely saw them around people other than the ones on their floor.

Growing up, I had some black friends and I never really thought much of it. Then I got into college and took an ethnic studies course. Now I act differently around black people, merely because I'm afraid that they will think I am racist. So I feel like I have to walk on tiptoes. My friend at another college shared the same experience as well.

Reveres racism is everywhere. We have government & the union that force equality upon people by demanding woman & ethic minority at the work place, which in my book is blatantly wrong. We have Asian parent that think all white girls/women are whores therefore don?t fit to mate with their sons.

It was wrong that the forefather of the dominant culture to stepped on the minority, and it is equally wrong for the minority children to prosecute the children of the dominating culture that has nothing to do with it except for the color of their skin or sex.

It seems like affirmative action has about run its course. 60 minutes did a story against it last night.

If you think about it, affirmative action made sense after jim crow laws and the oppression minorities faced prior to the 60's and 70's. To think that these programs are no longer needed means that we are finally making progress as a culture.

People need crutches when they have been injured, not after they've fully healed.

Isn't everyone a minority?

We already got rid of affirmative action here in California.

Oh, that's right, we're all a bunch of socialist liberal wackos

Ok, where's your study? This panel studied the issue and concluded something different than you. I'm more than amendable if you want to give me the study you conducted which concludes something different.

No complaints that you were willing to acknowledge. Are you sure you were paying all that much attention, since being the beneficiary of such policies can have a way of making you hardened and indifferent to critics of such policies.

I mean few people can muster the courage to say "I benefitted from policies that were unfair, but that's ok with me!" No, they're going to defend the policies and use any perverse logic to say they WERE fair.

Exactly what i think. Affirmative action just doesn't make sense anymore imho. And if you think your school population might be self-segregated, there was an article/study a while back showing that there was not only racial segregation at schools like Princeton and the like, but then divisions within the races based on wealth. So African Americans would split from the other groups, and then split and distance themselves and form subgroups based on wealth and family background. That's just crazy. Wish i had a link to that but i don't.

There is no such thing as reverse racism.

There was more going on than whites enslaving blacks (not saying any of it was right).

While no one gives a rip, that is one aspect of the entire debate that I disagree with. This idea that racism only qualifies as real racism if it's white-on-(insert minority here). The definition of racism is "Discrimination or prejudice based on race." If that's the case, if I'm discriminated against because I'm white, that is discrimination, not somehow "reverse" discrimination.

Small point. 😛
