Study: Patriots fans among most unstable fan bases

An Emory University study has confirmed what many people have long purported: Football fans -- and especially the ones rooting for the New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers or Oakland Raiders -- are an unstable group.

Marketing professors Michael Lewis and Manish Tripathi devised an algorithm and analyzed data to try to figure out how various fan bases deal with losses, and their study found that fans of the Raiders, Steelers and Patriots do not cope well.
It gets better.

In contrast, the gap for Dallas Cowboys fans was just 4.8 percent. That made them the most "stable" fans, followed by the Colts, Eagles, Texans and Falcons, who perhaps have reduced expectations.

Would agree that fans of teams that continually win ... or have had winning records for so long would have a higher expectation than those of losing teams. Consider fans of Alabama or Ohio State. They must have been devastated after their teams both lost this month.

the raiders fans don't have that excuse

😀

Seattle fans are gunning for the title next year. Witness the overwhelming gnashing of teeth after the loss in SF. You'd think SF killed someone's first born child.

raiders "fans" buy because they like the colors and the logo. It has never really been about the football so I consider this article trash.

There is no way the cowboys fans are the most stable. Just look at the past 2 weeks and the cowboy fans have disappeared, yep thats stable..

you want stable? Detroit Lions... I watched every 0-16 game (the blacked out one I still got OTA) Every game but 1 still sold out and even that one ended up sold out thanks to a last day special. Then we've got the Tigers who not that long ago set the record for losses in a season for BASEBALL. All of you other fan bases can suck it

Meh - this study is stating the obvious re: the patriots. I am a huge patriots fan, and I can tell you that the pats fanbase is the biggest group of glass half empty schmucks on the planet. We could win by 40 points and some idiot will find a reason to complain about how Brady could have thrown that 80 yard TD pass just a bit better. And god forbid we lose. If we lose the world is ending! How oh how can the patriots expect to win anything with THAT defense? Or what was Belichek thinking when he called a running play on 3 and 2 (hey dumbass, I'll tell you what he was thinking. And that was "I think I can get two yards with this running play."

Seriously, the average call on sports talk radio new england these days goes something like this: "OMG we're ONLY 10 and 4! WE SUCK! The world is gonna end because Wes Welker is gone and tom brady is getting old and randy moss was good and now hes bad and gone too but no worries we have gronkl but he is injured ooh my goooodo oh my god om my god om my gooood wud are we gponna do guys we aren't going to win a superbown or even the championship round this year WAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA but <switch to gollum voice) belichek is the man oh yes oh yes yes he isssssss... belichek will groom the precioooous patriotssssss into world beating superfeaksssssss yesss my preciousss...."

Maybe I'm just used to dealing with defeat a little better. I grew up watching the skins and the caps, so I've seen my fair share of epic failure.

Bullshit. Houston fans were going insane this year as the season started to implode. Some idiots even showed up at Matt Schaub's house to yell at him after a loss.

I don't like the guy because of his past success, but hate that his fan base abandoned him so quickly. Fans forget too easily that a QB isn't the only player on the field. Even when they throw picks, it's often a combination of poor route running by receivers or the line not giving the QB time to make the throw properly.

I went to the Colts vs. Texans game on Sunday and the Texans seriously looked like dead men walking. Their defense did manage to get some good pressure on Luck but otherwise, it looked like they're just phoning it in. I don't believe Keenum is not the answer for them at QB and look for them to draft one with the top pick or trade that pick for several picks.

We're all still here - no idea what you're talking about. Hell, I've been a lot less confrontational this year.

Houston, in general, has one of the worst sports fan-bases I've ever seen. They're so bandwagon and fair-weather, it's not even funny. Living here makes me enjoy the collapse even more, because I actually like the team.

What I said above. Schaub is serviceable enough to get them through a SB, much like Flacco.

They should have had the Broncos at the top of this list. Must have put them on top of the most delusional list instead.

Exactly! "Omg, we have Peyton! He is the second coming of Christ!" "It doesn't matter how cold it gets in Denver! He doesn't choke in cold weather." "No team can ever beat us, especially not the Colts, Chargers, or Patriots!"

Reminds me about how the Texans owner came out and said they had no intention of pursuing Peyton Manning because they have Matt Schaub and he can take them to a championship. LOL
