Students: Turn off your cell phones in class!

Get a better job? Are you kidding? It's sort of hard to make more than $20/hr at a desk job when you are still working on your degree :roll: I had the best job anyone could possibly ask for. I tried not to make a big deal about the cell phone, but when sh!t hit the fan, it hit the fan and I needed to excuse myself.

Secondly, I think you guys are the ones who need to get over yourselves. Why are you telling me to get over it? I don't let this stuff bother me. My position is the norm (that this crap happens, most of the time inapropriatley but somtimes very necessarily) and that you guys need to stop being so judgemental.

It's also worth noting that I made sure every professor was aware of my situation beforehand and tried to handle it as delicatley and politley as possible, by quietly excusing myself every time I had to go.

You don't need to see who called you during class. If its important they can leave a message. And switching it to 'silent' vibration mode doesn't suffice. The 40-50 people nearest you can still hear it. And you distract the rest of the class when you open/unzip your bag and go frantically searching for it. And if you need it to check the time, wear a watch, or get over it.

I personally enjoy it when someones cell phone goes off. We all get to point and shake our heads, especially when its a douchey ring. It's like the perfect opportunity to be a snob and get away with it.

Some girl's (not hot) phone went off in my grad thermo class, and the prof got (understandably) annoyed esp because it took 10 seconds for the girl to shut it off. The prof. proceeded to remind people to shut off their phones because it distracts from the class lecture and makes it tough for everybody to keep their concentration.

1 minute later, prof's cellphone rings.

Your friend is a dick, I find it beyond annoying when cell phones ring in class but people forget. If it happens more than once then I would probably agree with him but the first time could be just by accident.

Another cell phone story: Regular lecture in some class and the professor's cell phone rings. He hadn't made a big deal out of cell phones in class before, but whenever one rang he would makes jokes etc. So it rings .. and he answers it and has a five minute conversation in Portuguese in front of the class. Hilarious 🙂

The problem is that, "silent" mode or not, the call is a distraction to the entire class. Why should your needs outweigh everyone elses? We all pay for the classes, so the time you cost the class is money lost.

This topic hits a nerve, as I have started college this year as a freshmen at 26, after having worked full time for the past 9 years. Maybe I'm just becoming that crotchety old man yelling at the kids to stay off my lawn, but the attitude of the kids in my classes amazes and infuriates me. They talk all during class, text message their buddies, their cell phones ring during lecture, and they go out to the hall way and answer it, certain ones continually come in 15-20 minutes late to class every day. Every day.... :|

My classes are all less than 30 people, so one person can cause a big distraction, and every day someone does. They're there to play games, I'm there to get my money's worth, and GTFO.

and how the hell does vibrate mode disturb anybody-- especially if its in your pocket? maybe everybody should just stop breathing or taking notes because that disturbs you constantly as well.

And, I'm not talking isolated instances, I'm talking about the people who do it every day, and there are a lot.

It's an issue of respect. I respect my prof and my classmates enough to make sure that I'm not disruptive. It just irks me that some people don't have that kind of respect or courtesy.

I don't really experience much cell phone distractions in college. Maybe one or two cell phones will go off once a week, but really not more than that. I suppose it could be because my classes have only 35 students in them, so the odds are less . Anyway, when they do go off, I have never seen a person actually answer their phone. Whatever distraction they are, it's not much. The professor could just talk for another 20 seconds after the class ends if they timed their lecture to 50 minutes exactly.

Have you ever been in a classroom where you can hear a phone vibrating in a backpack somewhere? Although it doesn't really bother me much, it can be a bit annoying.

If I was a teacher, I'd get some sort of portable signal blocker that I could just keep on my desk and plug in during my classes. But those are illegal in the US so might be tricky... I'd also find a batery powered one to take with me to the movies.

One of my professors did that - a sort of "Do you want to answer it, or shall I? If you get it, just be sure to tell us all what's going on that's so important that you had to interrupt class." I don't recall what exactly happened next, but it was rather anticlimactic, unfortunately. No phone-smashing.

I'm 24, and feel the same way. Too many people go to the lectures to socialize. In a way, the professors bring it on themselves, with their surprise quizzes or attendance points, which encourage attendance only for that purpose - to take the quiz. I prefer the ones with the simple warning at the beginning, "You can come to class if you want to, or don't, it's your choice, I don't care. But you're almost certainly going to fail this class if you do not come to class regularly. I'll present the material, it's up to you to learn it." The teacher who gave that speech though, if he'd notice that maybe half the class was missing, he'd give those in attendance a quiz: "Write your name on a piece of paper and hand it in to me. It's worth 10 points." That would be it, which I did find somewhat amusing.

I still prefer the "Come if you want to, it's your choice" way of dealing with attendance.

That aside, it's kind of easy to be "distracted" when there are several conversations going on around you which make it difficult to even discern what the teacher is saying. If you want to socialize, get the hell out of the classroom and go do it somewhere else.

Possibly the loud BZZ-BZZ-BZZ which is audible across the classroom. It sounds like a pissed off 3" long bumblebee is stuck in someone's backpack. My cellphone has a true silent feature - it blinks, that's it. No ringing, no vibrating. And the even more silent option: OFF. It has this magical messaging service, which actually automatically records messages from people who call you when the phone is off. It's like Tivo for your cellphone! Goddamn amazing.

i have a phone and it is always on silent. if someone calls, regardless of who it is, i'll disconnect, send them and SMS and ask if it's really really important. if it is, i'll ask my teacher, go outside and return the call.

my english teacher get's especially mad when phones ring. he goes so far as to call it the devil. he does have a phone and one time after he shouted at two ppl who's phone rang, his own phone rang and everybody laughed. he had no excuse. :laugh: it was good.

I simply took the phone away and sent it to the office. As it was a 2nd offense, SHE couldn't pick it up; a parent had to pick it up. And, mom worked til 5pm. So, her mom had to take personal time or something, just to pick up the cell phone. She was super-mad at me for it - "it's your fault that I had to interupt my busy schedule to pick up a stupid cell phone that I pay $40 a month for."

My reply: "It's your daughter's fault that my class has been interupted repeatedly, and the taxpayers are paying a lot more than $40 a month so those students can learn."

I find that amusing. That cellphone was seriously that important that her mom felt she had to take time from work to pick it up? The right thing to do would be for the parent to say to her kid, "It was your own fault for being rude and using it in class. I'll pick it up when I have time."

Another good reply for you to this parent: "It's your own fault too for coddling your daughter like this. You seriously believe her cellphone is this important? It's either that, or your job is in fact not very critical."

Wow man we are in the same situation. I'm currently in college, and need to have my cell on 24/7, as I have about 30 clients for a small business I run.

But yeah, I always have it in my pocket on vibrate. Ringtones are pointless and extremely annoying.
