I agreed that a trip to prison for misbehaving children can be good for them... help them see how they CAN end up...

but there's absolutely no reason for them to be stripped... It's bad enough they have to be strip searched by the guards, but in front of inmates?!? How in the world would that help them in their life?

<< You don't do such things to innocent people. Not in a civilized society, or by a "civilized" prison system. >>

Well, if you *really* believe in a "civilized" justice system, then you also believe that people are innocent until proven guilty. That means that all prisoners entering prison before their trial should be immune from searches. As we all know, trials can last for years. Under your rules, guards wouldn't be allowed to search prisoners until the judge handed down the verdict several years later.

As for the allegations, video tapes will prove the truth. They can allege anything to build a case that will be heard, but it wouldn't necessarily be true. There are cameras everywhere in prison and that will likely decide the case.

NFS has the right idea. I agree this is horrible, but somethings just don't add up. Were there no school officials along on the trip or did they just agree to let all the kids be stipped down? So the guards let 8 prisioners out of thier cells to hold down the kids....I don't believe that. I don't believe the kids would be allowed within arms reach of any of the inmates. There was probably some injustice taken place, but I can't beleive any prision would be run like this and still have inmates, they'd all walk out the front door or something. I don't think we have the complete or correct story.

<< When some refused, they allege D.C. jailers told them they could not leave until they complied, and then they stripped. >>

Seriously, when I was in middle school if I was told that, I would have said okay just call my parents, I'll wait right here. Too quick to comply....

There is a difference between showing children a jail to scare the bejesus out of them an what is alleged to have happened. Yikes.

Do you think we will ever see this case in court? They will probably just settle and this will never go to trial...

makes you wonder what kinda prison that is. If they could do that to just kids, how do they treat the inmates?

Thats true - my last post is based on the allegations being true. We will find out if they are true soon enough in court, I suppose.

But taken as true and as reported, it was inexcusable and sick.

If it is true, there will be hell to pay. And jail sentences. Trust me.

Perhaps the Holiday Inn could contract to run the prison system. You don't go to prison as a reward for good behavior. Fact: Prison is ugly.

Rhosin, I'm sure not too differently. Ever seen shawshank redemption? Granted it's not the best or most accurate representation of prison, but in the beginning they spray 'em down with a hose and toss this disinfectant powder stuff on them, then make them walk naked to their cells.

Something tells me this is a "scared straight" attempt gone awry. I can't imagine school officials could've known what was to happen, or hopefully didn't. I bet the warden, or whoever arranged it on the prison side of things, probably thought he would teach the kids a lesson so they would straighten up.

I am guessing the kids' stories and the videotape will show two different versions of what happened...granted, some sort of foul play went on, but I have a feeling the kids smell $$$.

"Let's say they hit us..yea, yea, that's it...No, wait, let's say they hit us and then spit on us...no, wait, I got it; let's say they..."

I went through a portion of the scared straight program, as I went to one of the most violent high schools in the DC metro area.. it consisted of frightening images of death, speeches regarding loss... maybe even visits to see how inmates live... These kids are not criminals, treating them as criminals was never the idea of Scared Straight... parading naked high school girls in front of inmates is unacceptable, illegal and criminal... allowing inmates to forcibly strip a high school boy... is illegal and criminal... these are not part of the scared straight program...

I don't think the girls were ever paraded naked around in front of inmates. I read multiple stories on this, the link to this one is the only one that mentions the girls having to strip. The others said as many as 9 and as few as 5 boys were forced to strip and change into the prison uniforms.

Well,

The Fallout from the strip searches has begun. It looks like the kids were telling the truth. Admissions by the guards, the firing of the wardens, the suspension of school teachers and principal.

Obviously, they realize that they screwed up.

The comment by the one guard sums up why they will pay through the nose, "We took away their rights".

Fine if they are criminals that have gone through due process, but an egregious violation of their civil rights if not.

Kaching!

<< Ah yes...Bleeding hearts abound !
Another Columbine HS in the making.............................
If your kidz are crap they need that sort o' thing to see reallity after living with a worthless , oversupporting parent.....
A situation like that would surely change their attitude... They can pull sh!t off in school and at home but not in the "real" World
>>

Since when is prison the "real" world?
You live in a pathetic world, I take it.

Wow, you guys must all have PhDs in psychology.

Although 'scared straight' might seem like a reasonably effective means of deterring behavior, but in reality (and studies shows this), it's practically useless. Just as somebody who drives by a grizzly car accident may slow down for the next hour, but they'll quickly forget about the accident (or how gorey it was) and go back to their same behavior.
