Helpless that was really pathetic, I thought you and warcleric were both being childish but that type of comment is awful.

Chances are the visit is all on security video. It shouldn't be very hard for investigators to determine if it happened or not.

This should be interesting for my sister who was considering moving to DC for some reason.

Another Columbine HS in the making.............................
If your kidz are crap they need that sort o' thing to see reallity after living with a worthless , oversupporting parent.....
A situation like that would surely change their attitude... They can pull sh!t off in school and at home but not in the "real" World

murdock: again, how is turning children into objects of pornography helping them to improve themselves. All children misbehave at some point, I probably did it worse than anyone, and I turned out just fine when I grew up.

dayam!!...this is so disturbing it pisses me off..bunch of child pornography mofos...as a previous poster already stated, they should all burn in hell!!!...prison officials and those education employees involved....there is NO JUSTIFICATION whatsoever for what they put those kids through....

it's good that there are laws that protect stupid mofos like that, cuz if there weren't and it were my kid, i say forget the 4 mil, i'd stalk each of them down and beat their ass until they near death...

I am a conservative, I do not think the school has any right to "raise" my child. I will take care of the discipline, they can take care of the education, in fact maybe if they concentrated on education a little more, we wouldnt have all the substandard idiots coming out of public schools that we have now.

<< D.C. isn't that nice of a place, is it? I'm not sure because I don't live in the US, but I've heard some stories. >>

Sadly this is correct for the most part. Corruption is deeply embedded in the DC Government and has been since the days of Mayor Marion "The Night Owl" Barry. On the other hand the tourist areas are pretty nice for the most part although I would advise visitors to never bring an automobile into the city since parking enforcement is a major revenue source for the DC government.

the D taking control of the senate? fzck you... not everything is a D vs R issue... that comment just shows ignorance...

As for the 4 million each.... you should know that these are considered punitive damages... these damages are not assesed based upon how much the children or families "deserve" it's based upon punishment of the organization involved for allowing this to happen...

Warcleric,

I can see how you could get upset, but I'm not seeing anywhere where it says the children were made to strip in front of the prisoners. They were more than likely strip searched by the guards at the entrance to the cells, which could be necessary, but still bothers me.

The reason the schools have to take care of the discipline is because not all parents will, thus they have delinquents(sp?) disrupting class. The only way to attempt to quell this is to punish them. I applaud the school for taking them to the jail to see what it's like, however, I'm disgusted that they were allowed to stay long enough to witness the prisoners and that they were stripped.

You should also cease with your whinings about the child pornography instance. As stated in the first post, they are only alleging it happened. It also states the students were forced to strip, NOT forced to strip in front of the prisoners. If it's anything like our county jail, the room where they do the strip searching or any stripping, is seperate from the main jail area. Also, being that their children, you have to wonder just how exaggerative their minds are. Are they considering just taking of their shirts as stripping? Or maybe the officer on duty used a metal detecter and discovered they had a knife or something similar on them, they can't very well allow the student to go into the commons with a weapon, and since the student was on trip with the school, the student must turn it over, and in some instances has the right to be searched to discover it.

Let's look at the other scenario. If they wouldn't have been searched and one of them had conspired to introduce a weapon, material that could be made into a weapon, drugs, or other paraphenalia, what would be your opinion of the situation? What if a guard or officer got hurt/killed from this because some punk kid didn't think some common object in his/her pocket was important? It's difficult to keep prisons free of this crap.

I believe strip searches are in order for *anyone* entering a prison. My only concern is weather the students were given an option to back out and weather they were notified in advance of this possibility. As for lawsuits...what a crock. Don't students see each other in the shower at school during PE class? And if you've ever been to prison, you'll realize that you aren't exactly strip-searched in a gymnasium full of cheering inmates. You are typically searched in a very small room by a same-sex officer that never touches.

Okay, I have to retract my previous statement (3 posts up) due to this quote from the article:

<< "One of the boys was held down by eight inmates while his shoes were stripped off," Wayne Cohen, an attorney for the victims' families, told a press conference announcing the lawsuit. "He was then told to take his boxers off. He had his hands covering his genitals. He was yelled at to remove his hands, to grab his ankles, to squat and to cough." >>

If true, this is sick and wrong. I understand how strip searches are done in jail and that's fine for the prisoners, but not for a child.

Apparantly one girl is claiming to have been paraded nude in front of the inmates... and that one boy was stripped by the inmates...

This is a gross violation of Civil Rights.

If this is a true story, than there will be hell to pay.

For those of you arguing "for" this type of treatment, please understand this. When a person is charged (indicted) for a crime, or incarcerated, a significant portion of there civil rights are suspended. Not all, mind you, but certainly most. As a result, forced strip searches are permittable. However, these children were not incarcerated or charged with a crime. Their Civil Rights were in full effect, and this is therefore hardly anything less than sexual assault and intimidation.

There will probably be jail sentences for some of the perpetrators. This has nothing to do with "Scared Straight", since from what I have been lead to believe, these children were "at risk", or likely to follow a path that will lead them into trouble. That does not mean that they are or will be criminals. The incident above is deeply disturbing for that reason. You don't do such things to innocent people. Not in a civilized society, or by a "civilized" prison system.

The mentatlities of some of the people on this board are just as disturbing as the incident in question, since some of you seem to accept this machevellian style of intimadation. One wonders what you would do were it you, or someone in your family, who had such an indignity and humiliation imposed on them. Let alone the risk of bodily harm that comes with being assaulted by inmates intent on stripping you.

The puntative damage of 4 million is far too low for the damage, both real and potential, that was inflicted.

Locklear: read the article again, especially this part:

These were children!!! Only even SOME of which were in MINOR trouble at school (detention or small suspension stuff). But a bunch were also children who volunteered to go as a learning experience!

They were strip-searched BY prisoners, then led, EVEN THE GIRLS, to parade past the prisoners!!!

Anyone who thinks this is normal, just, or right has some seriously f*cked-up ideas. :|
